Bryston BDA-3 - No HDMI output?
« on: 31 Jan 2020, 11:13 pm »
Good Evening,

Just received my new Bryston BDA-3 in the post today and eagerly hooked it up this evening to try it out.  Sadly, I have no HDMI output.  I have a FireTv Stick plugged in to HDMI1, My OPPO BDP-103 in HDMI2 and our Bell ExpressVu Sat in HDMI3 and HDMI out to my Panasonic Plasma Tv.  No matter which input I select, I'm not getting any video out to the Tv?

I'm sure I'm doing something wrong but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hate getting a new toy and not being able to play with it  :duh:

Hi

Sounds like it could be a defective HDMI cable - one going to the TV?
Maybe an internal Cable on the BDA has come loose?
Maybe in some way the TV is not 'handshaking' with the BDA?
Maybe have your dealer try it on a TV in the store?

Its the week end so I can not get in touch with engineering for you but email Mike on Monday morning and he can help.  - mpickett@bryston.com

Where are you located and whom did you purchase the BDA-3 from?

Hi James,

Can't thank you enough for taking the time to reply, on a weekend, no less.  That's some kind of service.

I'll try a different cable to the TV.  I have changed all the others but not that one.  If it's an internal cable, I don't want to void any sort of warranty by opening it up but am an Electronics Technologist, or at least I was one years ago and would have no issues opening up the cover to see if it's just something simple.

I live in New Brunswick and unfortunately we have no Bryston Dealers here.  I had to purchase the unit sight unseen from Audition Veritable in Quebec.  It was an open box unit.  I've contacted the salesman there and he has been fantastic thus far however he admits he never used the HDMI, just hooked up a CD Player to it.

We love living in a quiet Province but it bites when we can't just walk into a Bryston Dealer and drool  :D

Have a great weekend and thank you again.

Chris

Hi Chris

Opening it will not void the warranty and just see if a cable has come loose.  Make sure you unplug the power cable first.

If no luck then give Mike a call on Monday - 1-800-632-8217

Hi James,

Finally had an afternoon off work so I took the BDA-3 out of the rack and was going to take the top off until I saw that the screws are Torx.  LOL!  I'll have to take a trip into town and see if I can find a set of Torx screwdrivers.

While I'm waiting, I was hoping you could take a look at the attached photo of the back panel.  I'm probably just making stuff up now but the USB port looks like it's missing a plastic cap?  I looked at the manual and it shows both without the black plastic center cap but I haven't seen a USB port without out the cap.  What do I know!

Cheers,

Chris

How cool is it that the VP of the company answers your question, on a weekend no less, and then says... Go ahead and open up your new BDA-3 and see what you can see... "Opening it will not void the warranty and just see if a cable has come loose".  Common sense and stellar customer service.

I was a fan of Bryston when I first heard my "new to me" Bryston 9B ST and then a bigger fan after hearing my BDA-3.  After this, I'm a Bryston fan and more importantly a Bryston customer for life.

Can't thank you enough James.  As seen in the attached photo, the ribbon cable on the HDMI card was not seated properly.  HDMI is working like a charm now.

Kind Regards,

Chris Peabody
Hampton, NB

Ps... Any opinions on the USB port pictures.  Cap missing?

Judging from all the photos I can find online, it appears that it is missing the cover.  Is this something that I can source or would my baby have to go back for repair?

None of my business, really, but I'd wager that "open box" unit didn't exactly get the white glove treatment by the dealer - or by whoever the dealer got it from.

I can't believe that the unit left Peterborough in that condition.

Anyhow, glad you got it sorted and props to James and Bryston for their support.

Hard to say for sure of course but I choose to think it was just an unfortunate turn of events.  The ribbon cable could have been jarred loose during shipping and the little missing cap could have got stuck in a cheap USB cable when it was demo'd at the dealer or perhaps it's been damaged.  In any event, so far, the salesman, at the authorized dealership that I made the purchase from, has been very good.  He's gone so far as to send unsolicited follow up Emails to ensure that I'm happy.

I have no complaints.  Things happen... and when they did, both Bryston and the dealer stepped up.  I'll likely be buying more Bryston gear and it will probably be from the same dealer.

Re: Bryston BDA-3 - No HDMI output? ***Update***

Just an update in case it helps someone else someday.

As it turned out, the USB Port was indeed damaged and the unit needed to be returned to Bryston for repair.

As expected, the folks at Bryston were top notch and there was no charge for the repair.  I had the unit out and back in about two weeks.

I contacted the dealer I purchased the BDA from and they graciously agreed to cover my shipping costs to send the unit back to Bryston.

Unfortunate turn of events but everyone remained professional and polite.

Will certainly be buying more Bryston products in the future and will most likely be buying from the same dealer.
