First board I've joined.
« on: 30 Apr 2018, 01:04 pm »
Hello,

I started enjoying vintage stereo equipment for about 5 years now and have a pretty decent setup at the moment.  Looking for recommendations on an equalizer and do not know if an expensive unit is the way to go. I am huge in to vinyl and my speaker setup has a lot of sub-woofers and trying to balance it all out.

Welcome Mario.

Have you found Audio Kinesis here at Audio Circle (child circle)?  Duke LeJeune speaks a lot about setting up multiple subwoofers (swarm is what he calls his offering).  Read Floyd O'Toole's "Sound Reproduction" to get a handle on the theory/advantages behind the proper use of multiple subs.  EQ should only be thought of as icing on the cake.  Best to start with a good room (proper size/shape/materials) then add treatments/subwoofers as needed/desired, finally look into EQ or nowadays DSP.  Old EQ units have tons of sliders which are notorious for collecting dust/rust/dirt film.

Note: avoid trying to bring up narrow frequency response dips (for instance a 20 dB dip takes 100 times the power to even it out) which can cause the amp to clip and instantly lead to speaker damage.

Welcome Mario,

You mentioned you are into vintage gear and you're looking for an EQ.  If you want to keep to vintage/analog rather than digital for the EQ, an Audio Control C101 is a very nice 80's vintage unit that comes with a mic, RTA & pink noise generator-- if you can find one they are very reliable and well built.

Most people want a EQ to up the bass, if its the Mario prob, I suggest dont spend cash in an EQ, instead change the speakers internal stuffing, for a first class service remove all the stuffing and before applying the new one paint all sides inside the enclosure with black mate paint and after add the new stuffing.

Thanks for the link.  The bass is not my problem.  I'm running 2 Sansui SPX 11000's 2 and Kenwood KL 777DX.  I need my mids and highs to come through better.

In this case stm you need delicacy and refinement, these speaker wont do it.
Since that time speakers evolve a lot in that area,
