Just wondering.  Has anyone done anything with this?   http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/83-14275

Raspberry Pi as music server Part II

I have been kicking around the idea of using a RP or Audrino for a DAC or music server. More for a DAC, but cannot put togeather the concept of doing it or if it is even a benefit.
http://learn.adafruit.com has some pretty interesting things. One is a 12-BIT DAC with a Raspberry PI. I have also seen an Audrino used with Wolfson Audio DACS. Ch34eck this out http://hifiduino.blogspot.com/2009/05/arduino-controller-dac.html.

So it looks like it has picked up steam in new inventions with the PI and Audrino.

If anyone hasinterest or has done some of the projects I would like to hear from you.

I finally gave in and just got my RP last week. I haven't had tons of time with it. This is the one I got -

CanaKit Raspberry Pi (512 MB) Basic Kit (Raspberry Pi 512 MB + Premium Black Case + Micro USB Power Supply)

Here are some things I am going to try with it.

I have a HiFimeDIY Sabre U2 Asynchronous USB DAC that I will be using with it.

I am going to test out the following three pieces of software:

Runeaudio

Volumio

PiCorePlayer

and go from there.

I have tried Volumio and Picore player and I personally like the volumio better ( after some tweaks to enable it to run as a squeezebox player )

Volumio gives you the advantage of MPD+Airplay+squeezebox player all in one package. However, it is quirky at times ( note its a beta)

I use the M2tech Hiface II as a USB SPIDIF. The whole unit is powered by a battery pack to take it of the grid.

I am sure it could work.

I am using a hacked Pogoplug as a music player with much success.  USB to HRT Music Streamer II, and controlled by iPeng on any iDevice.

I have heard that some folks have had success using one as the music server too, but I never got that to work.

I wonder if Daphile could run on a Pi?

I want to know more about this and server based systems in general. What I eventually would like to have is a headless server controllable from an iDevice, with its content stored on some sort of solid state media (i.e., no moving parts.) This would feed a decent "Cheap & Cheerful" DAC. Right now the storage seems the biggest hurdle to doing it "C&C" as I have about 120GB of lossless music and am watching for SSD prices to fall.

Some people use USB drives and hook them up to there system and play music back that way.

Some people use a NAS device - prebuilt or diy depending on ones needs.

I believe all these can be controlled in some way through an Idevice or android device.

My rasbbery pi just arrived yesterday.
I am using it with rasbmc at the moment.

SSD prices are still quite high, have you considered a network attached hard drive?

You will need the pi on the network to run it headless anyways.

Looks like the lower cost schiit dacs work with the pi.
