Accursed MPOD - Cannot Set Up -- Again!
« on: 22 Apr 2012, 04:05 pm »
I have had no end of trouble with this accursed app on my iPhone. Very frustrating. When I did get it set up, it froze, so I abandoned it for Gnome. Now trying it again:

I have tried in the Server box: bryston-bdp-1.local  No good. Then tried unit IP # 192.168.1.4. Also no good. Any other suggestions?

Why not put instructions somewhere accessible, like in the Manual? As I have said many times, this is a great unit but the software and instructions (such as they are) leave much to be desired.

Thanks for the help.

When I entered the IP address of my new BDP-1 into MPOD on my iPod Touch, it connected on the first try.  Perhaps your iPhone is attempting to connect through its cellular radio as opposed its wifi radio?   Can you currently use your iPhone to successfully talk to other devices on your local wifi connected network?

Regarding MPOD reliability....  I have discovered that fetching album art can cause MPOD to become less stable.  If you're experiencing stability issues, give this a try.  Be sure to disable art fetching from all sources:  Local, Amazon, and Discogs.

When I had Local album art enabled to fetch from http://bryston-bdp-1/music I was experiencing frequent MPOD crashes while attempting to initially load all my art.  Since then I have discovered this only occurs when a large number of the album directories are missing their Folder.jpg file.  By ensuring that all my albums contain a valid art file, my MPOD has become rock solid and no longer crashes or locks with art enabled.  Once I figured this out, I became very happy with MPOD.

I agree with you that the BDP-1 manual sucks.  While I was able to figure everything out without reading it, I had to ask myself "Would my father be able to successfully configure this thing using these instructions?"   Sadly the answer is "no".

Hi

Sorry you are having trouble with MPOD.  :duh:

I have used my iTouch and my iPad with MPoD for over 2 years now and never seem to have the issues you are seeing. :scratch:  Maybe it has something to do with the iPhone as suggested above?

Also have you tried the web interfaces on the iPhone like the MINI or MINI 2? To see if you still have the drop out issues?

I sent an email from iPhone to computer on same wi-fi network so that worked. Disabled all the Fetch Album Art settings.

I once set it up before; cannot understand why it will not set up now.

Here is what I have tried:

On Preferences screen, I press MPD Server;

On Connection screen, I press Manual Connection Setup;

Brings me to Add Connection screen. Under MPD section, Port is always 6600, never use Password, leave Yes for, Use Local Cache.

 In Server I have tried Bryston-bdp-1.local.  No go. Tried unit IP address, 192.168.1.4. No go.When I hit Save, Error screen comes on and says: "Couldn't connect to the MPD Server."

I have no trouble with either MAX or Gnome used on laptop.

So what am I doing wrong?

Thank you.

Neal

Here is the setup screen.  If bryston-bdp-1.local does not work then try the IP address.

MPD is often very case-sensitive.  I would try "bryston-bdp-1.local" (i.e do not capitalize the B in Bryston).

do you have more than 1 wireless network? I do, and although they're all part of one encompassing network (my airport express's extend the wired network) Mpod has better connection through the wireless network Im closest to. Seems logical of course, but when walking around the house it doesn't always change the network, because it can still see the network you were before.... Manually changing it always solves the issue.

I am not sure what I did differently, but BINGO, it is working. Thanks for your help and tolerating my rants.

Hey guys,

I did not think MPOD was able to fetch local cover art from files with the BDP-1. Have you found a way for this to actually work?

Yes.

Read this:

Make sure that you have everything exactly as stated or it won't work.

Oops!!

What I just posted was for MPaD.

Not sure if that will work for MPoD.

George, Mpod and mPad pretty much act the same.  And yes, mPod can retrieve local folder cover art (aka folder.jpeg).
