I just finished up on a pair of N3S yesterday evening and connected them to my system this morning. They have all the performance upgrade options (Sonicap capacitors, Mills resistors, No-Rez) plus Platinum bypass caps too. They really sound great. Very detailed and transparent with excellent imaging and depth. Both the N3S and the N3 TL towers use the same drivers and crossovers so from approximately 65 hz and above they sound identical. The N3 TL's have lower and more prominent bass due to their transmission line loading. In comparison to the N2X the N3S has higher sensitivity, greater power handling capability,and better dynamic range. To me, the bass resonse seems to be a little bit better too.

Attached are some pictures taken during the assembly. I built these mainly  because I just enjoy building speakers. If anyone might be interested in buying these  just send me a PM.

Are there bypass caps on the low pass filter as well?  I ordered some Platinums and am getting four.  If there is a bypass on the lowpass wouldn't I need six?

The platinums are best used on the tweeter caps as they are in the signal path. 

The woofer caps can be bypassed with Gen II sonicaps as they are parallel to the woofers and don't affect the signal as much.

At least that's my understanding.

Ron & some others are using the cheaper Gen II bypass capacitor for the N2x woofer.  It's smaller, but you can see the Gen II bypass cap on the low pass filter network per cool  photo that Ron posted above.

Since the most benefit from using Platinum bypass capacitors is realized in the mid/higher frequency range Danny recommends using the Platinum caps on the two (2) high pass filter capacitors and a .1 uf Gen. 2 Sonicap on the single low pass filter capacitor. You could use a Platinum bypass on the low pass filter but it would cost more and I don't think the improvement would be enough to justify the extra expense. Previous speaker systems that I have built with Platinum bypass caps were all done the way Danny suggested and it worked very well.

The frequency range that the bypass caps carry is above what is handled by the woofer so in that application they are just helping the capacitor to discharge faster. Whereas, in the tweeter they are actually carrying an audible portion of the frequency. Use the Gen 2 that I sent you in the low pass network and you will be golden.

 I attach the grill cloth by first spraying the back side of the grill frame with 3M Brand No. 77 spray adhesive available at most home improvement stores like Lowes and Home Depot. Cut the grill cloth approximately 2-3 inches larger than the grill frame all the way around. Lay the grill frame face down on the grill cloth and stretch over the back side of the frame doing one side and then the opposite side pressing firming to make sure the cloth sticks to the frame. Trim the excess grill cloth with a utility knife. Once the grill cloth is attached I like to go back over the attached areas with a clothes iron set on medium heat.

I can attest for the build quality of Ron's speakers. I bought a pair of N3S in the same cherry finish this past year from Ron and the speakers look and sound fantastic!!!

I'm getting ready to build my first N3S.  Looking at the placement of the 2 XO boards, it looks like they rest on Brace A, blocking the 3" holes.  Is it OK to block them?

It is a sealed box so you are not really blocking any air flow.

I personally use one crossover board and mount it in the floor of the enclosure, but what Ron did above is also fine.

 The No-Rez should placed between 1-1/4 to 1-1/2" back from the rear side of the front baffle board. Danny is correct that placing the crossovers over the 3" diameter holes in the upper and lower braces will not be an issue since the cabinets are sealed. Also, I use 1/4" thick rubber washers at all four (4) corners of the crossover boards between the bottom of the crossover boards and the braces.

Hi, forgive me to bring up this old thread. I have the same question on the N3 TL box. The plan only shows the length of No Rez on the top side. And I measure by the scale of the plan it's about 7.7", eg 2.3" from the rear side of the front baffle. Is it correct?

Also there is no drawings to show the length of all side mounted No Rez. Are they the same as the top one?

1.5" - 2" is room enough.

You got it. The side pieces are set back the same distance from the baffle.
