The main 2 things that were stripped from the book was the gradual disintegration of the prison psychologist after he starts treating Rorschach, and the "Dark Waters" comic book about the descent into madness and evil of the sailor trying to get home to save his family.  These 2 things, taken together, help solidify the them of dissolution and despair in the book, but which is largely absent in the movie, which I thought was much more hopeful.

Having never read the novel, and going in knowing it was 2 hours and 43 minutes, I was entertained.  The pacing was quite good, the character build ups exceptional.  Not knowing how the original novel ended, and having an inkling of a notion how the world would react, the 'peace' enjoyed by 1985, does not carry over to our 2009.  I liked how graphic it was, very true to comic novel writing, and the real world.
I highly recommend a viewing.

I'm looking forward to seeing this movie. Wired magazine has an article about Watchmen, Zack Snyder, and the making of a movie everyone said couldn't be done.

I just finished watching this movie a few minutes ago.  It was just okay for me, not great.  Other than the previous reviews here I had no previous knowledge of the "Watchmen."  This was one of those films that I was anxious for it to end.  My rating 3 stars out of 5.

***SPOILER ALERT***

I was surprised by the change in plot...having Dr. Manhattan framed for the explosions versus the fake alien invasion with missing artists / psychic, genetic experiments, etc.

To be honest the movie version was cleaner...but the book version had me thinking a bit harder throughout.

I hated this movie.  Too long, boring (I dozed off several times), wacky all around.  Visually okay.

Not saying I loved it, but I did like the twists in history to create a parallel universe.

This film was good in some ways and not in others. I particularly liked the way music was used to denote the passage of time, the moving through decades.
For the most intelligent being and the omnipitent being to be portrayed as out of touch with the world was quite interesting for me, though him having a girlfriend is rather rediculous and that she should leave him for a mortal shows a missunderstanding of Greek mythology,  the questions asked of them being of such magnitude and yet these same problems exist at the smallest level (our own lives) but ultimately this was a very violent film with some rather meaningless sex scenes (as in the sex was meaningless not the sex in context of the plot) so all in all just another violent american film that whilst trying to touch on interesting filosofikull topics still ahs to panda to brainless morons with pretty people and explosions with horribly graphic violence. Only a person who has not experienced violence enjoys watching it.
It would have been much better if the chap with the glasses had politly declined the long haired womens crude advances whilst on the rebound from the blue irridescent bloke but then humanity would have been portrayed in a much better light thus changing the story all together.

I'm half way through the graphic novel (haven't seen the movie) and HIGHLY recommend it!
