18" has arrived (was on it's way)
« on: 3 Apr 2007, 09:03 pm »
I have bought two of these to try it out in a ripole. If it's success, I'll go for two more for stereo.

It's going to work from 80hz and down.
I think the specs are good for the purpose. Agree?

Cheers

Good FS.

Wonderful swept area, those 18's will really push some air!

Is the QTS high enough?  What EQ do you intend to use?

I am sure with the XMAX, you will create some good bottom end.

Hi Mark

I'm using my behringer DCX for Eq. I will also test with some seriesresistor. I have good experiences with tuning the bass with seriesresistor. You can have it tight or fat (large - small).

The front is identical to the SI coax.
The rear looks like the Augies.
Yessiree they do (kinda why I was asking )

Have had them up and running for a week or so. Have gone the minimalistic way by just mounting them on a sheet of plywood.

It's on prototype stage yet. But one driver weigh 24 pounds, and is stable by it's own weigtht.

Here's the size compared to a cd-cover:

It's place'd right in front of the mainspeaker:

I'm cutting the bass upwards at 80hz/48 dB, and downwards at 22hz/48dB.

The sound:
Each driver has taken the place of dual Peerless 12" in each channel (W-baffle). I thought the 12" where nice, but the difference is quite big. The bass is much tighter and not boomy at all (which the 12" was in some way at loud volumes). The kick drum is really sounding like a kick drum, and not some animated wannabe :) The deep bass is less distorted and is not trigging any big resonances in my room
This driver seems to fit the broadbander much better regarding sonics. The 12" broadbander is a coted papertype. Just the same as the 18".
I have not applied any eq yet, as I do not feel the need for any. There is enough grunt down there. I'm going to run some sweeptones sometime , to get a real picture of the performance around 20-30hz.
As you might see, the old housing for the W-baffle, is making som kind of U-baffle. But it's not contributing to much, because it's not airtight on the sides (quite a gap).

Next: Try them in a ripole, and if success, buy another pair :)

I'm very happy with these new drivers. I have already sold the old 12" Peerless for the same amount I gave. I have used them for 4 years . (Who said DIY is expensive :) ) If I do not enjoy the ripol's, I have planned to make a baffle ala Jamo 909 with one 18" in ech channel. Magnet mounted off course. I could live very happy with only one driver pr. side, as it's already bettering the bass from most of the other gear I have lent my ear to (at a fraction of the cost).

There is no substitute for large conearea aa

Cheers

I have tried asking this before without any answers, but this seems like a good place to try again.
I am not sure I understand what I am looking at when I see the frequency response graph.
To me it looks horrible because I always thought a flat response is what is desired.
I have no authority to say that it actually is horrible, it might be great.  I just see that it is not flat.
Below 100Hz this doesn't look any better than a 3" driver other than having higher SPLs.
Is the drop-off countered by room gain?
If so it would seem some serious equalizing would be necessary to adapt it to a particular room.

Damn!   those are really cool looking.    a bit Ronin'esque...

the magnet support is excellent.

The position in the second pic looks just about perfect.  Just add damping and staggered cross bracing and a top in that U.  It will give you greater bottom end potential and require less power.  Since it fits so well you should give it a shot.  There's also something different about sound "mushed" out of a deep manifold and direct radiation, though it may not matter much below 80hz.  Keep in mind that you need almost an 8m long room for dipole to 22hz.

JeffB:

I have no idea. But based on your proposal on eq, I tried with some eq. It's easily done on my behringer dcx. Some eq is fine, but it's a fine line between good bass on most recordings, and exaggerated bass on the more bassheavy recordings.

Gooberdude:
I agree aa

JohninCR:
I have to try the U-baffle as you say. It's easy and not much work. I have done the U-baffle earlier with some 12", and it had defiantly more bottom. Things started to rattle in the room. My experience with ripole shows no problem when the X-over is as low as 80hz, so I do not think it will be any problem. My room is over 9 meter long, but unfortunately I'm sitting in the middle of it. :D
