Hmm upon further inspection the cable from the driver actually separated from the plastic/metal assembly. :duh: I really am not sure how to save this thing from here

You can solder it back on too.

This is why I use a really hot soldering gun. I can get on and off before the heat can start to move up the terminal.

I will give that a try. My iron is hot, but my skills are not. I am very slow and inefficient at getting the wires in place especially on the drivers requiring 2 wires per. Thanks again guys for the advice.

Alright I should wrapping up with the rebuild this week. I was put out with some health issues.

In regards to room acoustics are these what I should be getting?
http://www.amazon.com/Auralex-D36CHA-PUR-Designer-Roominator/dp/B0002D0KV4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1335789449&sr=8-3

In my new room my neos sound bright with the mids washed out and no bass(sub isn't in there yet) I tried moving the speakers all over with little success. I want to get my treatments ordered before my xstatiks are back together.

Also on a side note I ended up selling my xpa5 and am picking up a peachtree decco2. I was in the market for a headphone amp and heard the dac was amazing so I will probably use it with this system

For acoustic treatments, foam is not quite the best since it does not absorb lower frequencies much at all.  But if you want the look I recommend www.thefoamfactory.com/acousticfoam/acousticfoam.html

Most recommend panels such as these: http://www.atsacoustics.com/cat--ATS-Acoustic-Panels--100.html

I just assembled my DIY panels.  I got 26 3" OC 703 2'x2' panels for only $100, but this was done on the extra cheap.  I would give the looks a 6/10, beat up burlap looks pretty rough but they are definitely going to do the trick.

The OC stands for Owens Corning 703.  It is thier sound insullation product.  You can buy it just about anywhere and cover it and frame it to suit your taste.  24 x 48 behind each speaker.  One in the center. Then work on the first reflection points on the right and left side of the room.  One behind your listening area as well.   Six pieces and perhaps one on the ceiling.  If I were you I might take my time and introduce the treatments as you might be able to aford them or as you can build them.  Bring in the little lady to help pick the colors on the covers.  She may have some great color coordination insights.

6 pieces for $69.

So in your opinions the foam is crap? I really enjoy the appearance. Do either of you have any pictures of your treatments I could take a look at?

SoCal,

You still have fiberglass under your fingernails from cutting OC 703.  Any pics to show?  Advice on cutting?

Seriously, just use a large buckknife or similar.  That stuff is so easy to cut and does not really get everywhere, I will hopefully be posting in my thread about my process.  It was worse dealing with the burlap than the OC 703 honestly.

Well in smaller rooms, your issues are more likely in the lower frequencies which means serious bass trapping alone with dealing with first reflections.  The foams density is usually half of OC 703 and about 1/3rd of OC 705, and density is necessary for lower frequencies.  But something is better than nothing, and honestly treating the first reflections with foam isn't a bad idea.

As for pics, I will have to post those a bit later.  Honestly, my treatments I did on the ultra ultra cheap and I would give the looks about a 5/10.  I didn't frame them, and I utilized used burlap sacks.  Extremely cheap and effective, but not much WAF.  The ats acoustics link will give you an idea how they should look with proper framing.

Just an update, I got in touch with a buddy with soldering skills so between the two of us we finished one of the speakers tonight. We will be finishing up the other one tomorrow. He is pretty handy so I think we will be able to repair that driver. I can't wait to hear these damn things. It's been so long.

Hm...sounds like someone put wool socks over my speakers. Hopefully things brighten up with some serious break in.  :duh:

They shouldn't sound like that even from the get go. I hope you guys didn't accidentally get a polarity flipped.

What should I expect to hear? It almost sounds like the high end is too quiet. I can hear the tweet when I put my ear to it though

If the polarity on the tweeter is flipped then there will be a 15db suck out at 2kHz. That would make the highs pretty quiet.

Now you need to put a good 100 hours of time on them for them to smooth out.  :)

These are some of the best speakers I remember hearing. Thanks so much Danny. I no longer feel like I need a sub and the treble sounds so damn clear. Soundstage is impressive.

Awesome!  Burn baby burn.  Post some impressions once you are convinced they are baked to perfection.
