Yamaha DSP-A1.. out of date?
« on: 26 Apr 2004, 09:17 am »
Hi!

This is my first post. Nice board, ive had some good reading! Ive been especially interested in the Panny XR45 posts.  :)

But anyways, now back to my question. Ive been offered to buy a Yamaha DSP-A1 amp. The olde Yamaha flagship. It will be mine for about $570.

My question is, is it worth the money? It does have DD, DTS, but not Pro Logic2. Personally i think it fits my needs, but on the other hand i could buy a Marantz SR-6300 for the same price! Is the DSP-A1 worth the money, is the value good?

Would u buy it?

Welcome mlmc, I don't know what it is about this machine but I've seen it list for cheap as you say....I don't know why.  I have never heard it so I can not comment on how it sounds.
I have older Yamaha DSPs and would trade them all for DPL II.  It does have two sub outs and the xo is at 90Hz.   Don't know the slope.

The DSP-A1 is old but still good value with all the surround modes you *really* need, lots of adjustibility and video switching facilities that are rare amongst modern AVRs/pre-pros.

The sound is a bit bright but it's only real weakness is the built-in power amp section that does not take to being pushed hard. When overdriven the sound gets nasty. This can be overcome by using the preamp outs and running separate power amps.

Be gentle and it's still a fine unit especially at around the $500 mark.

If you do consider it make sure you get the owners manual with it !
