What to do?
« on: 26 Apr 2004, 08:45 am »
I have a chance to get a McIntosh C200 preamp.  I am thinking about going digital for the amp.  Maybe the new Spectron Musician III.  However, I am concerened about the future in that I keep reading about digital recievers.  I have never heard one, but would these Panasonics for instance,  will they be able to compete sound wise with the setup I am looking at?  If so, it would be stupid of me to spend thousand on a preamp and seperate power amp (even though it is digital) if the Panasonics or others can compete soundwise right now or in the near future for just a fraction of the cost.  Really, are we getting to the point where these digital recievers can compete soundwise with very expensive preamp/amp combo's?  Any input would be appreciated.  Thoughts?

That is one hell of a preamp.  And I know people who say the same of the Spectron.  If you have that kind of loot, just go ahead and buy the nice stuff, then drop $300 on a Panasonic, and get your own reality check that way.  Don't buy into the whole $300 "world-beater" of the month club.
