Sound quality of N1 vs N1x vs N2x
« on: 26 Oct 2011, 11:17 am »
I've heard the N1, which sounds fantastic.  But can anyone describe how the N1 sound quality compares to N1x and N2x?  Danny you're welcome to put your 2 cent here.

They sound very much alike with only a few subtle differences between them.

I'll probably stick with the N1, but need to figure out who is going to route the cabinet for drivers and port, etc.  Danny, so why have 3 different models if there are only subtle differences among them?  I get a headache trying to decide on which one to get ;-)

Bass response varies between N1X and N2X. One is sealed, one is ported. Different size cabinets, as well...so can be used in different situations. I've used and loved the N2X... being sealed works well to mate with subwoofers.

Think of it as having to choose between Angelina, Scarlett or Eva...  What's the problem?

The N1 and N1X are rear ported designs with a bass response of - 3db @ 55 Hz. The N2X is sealed with a bass response -3 db@ 65 Hz. I presently have a pair of 2X and agree with  cujobob that they mate very well with a subwoofer.

I would take Scarlett  over Angelina and Eva any day.  But we're talking speakers here.  What I'm wondering is how does N1 compare to N1x and N2x in terms of speed, dynamics, imaging/soundstaging, and bass extension.  I would think N1x would have more dynamic bass because the extra excursion capability of the x motor.   The N2x uses are larger bass driver so I would have thought better low bass extension but the sealed design makes it less extended than the smaller N1/N1x.  It seems to me the three would sound very similar except for the bass and ultimate loudness.  But Danny would know this better than anyone else.

Real close on all of that stuff.

Not really. It has lower distortion in the lower region (technically) as the woofer maintains a more constant BL curve over its entire range. But the lower sensitivity of the XBL motor design limits its overall output slightly verses the standard M-130 woofer used in the N1.

This is true. However, you can build a small floor standing version with a ported box to allow low bass extension to be considerably lower than the other two.

I had the N2X's here for awhile and using them with a subwoofer was excellent and easy to configure, I was considering the N3's just to cover all my bases but I think I really prefer the sound of a 2.1 setup, I can feel -on good recordings- the kick drum in my chest like when I was a little shaver at a parade, it is one reason I took up playing drums.

The overall best part of the N2X for me was how smooth and seamless the crossover points sounded, I was amazed at that and ha never heard it done so well before-thats the reason I really enjoyed them and can't get them OUT OF MY HEAD!!!    AAAhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....LLOLOL :thumb:

Ok Danny, you convinced me to stick with the N1. And it's more affordable too :thumb:

Danny, maybe a silly question, but could the N1 or N1X kits be built into a (really) small floorstander?  I know it probably wouldn't gain anything in low end extension, but no stands, very easy to place, and high WAF due to tiny "lifestyle" form factor?

Those two smaller woofers really can't handle any more air space.

But image a small tower with one more woofer.... and you have the N3 model.  :D

Just thinking out loud with the idea in my head about keeping the overall cabinet depth down. . . think like A/V-O tiny.  Maybe build out the monitors, refiguring the volume with the lower cabinet depth, finish with a sand-filled base like the old X-SLS cabinets. . . or N2X towers with shallower/taller internal box dimensions. . .

Just keep in mind that woofers like to have more depth than width behind them. Ideally the width needs to be 1/2 to 1/3rd of the depth.
