pmc upgrades ?
« on: 25 Oct 2011, 08:37 pm »
Hi. I was trying to determine what the changes were on the pb1i form the earlier model. Someone thought that the dome mid is now a more improved model as well as the tweeter. Is this the case? There apparently is a heavier woofer involved but PMC tells nothing of the other drivers. Thanks to anyone that knows  :thumb:

Redbook :  I do not believe that there ever was a PB1. The PB1i was a new design so there was no non-"i series" version of that speaker, unlike say the OB1 or FB1 / FB1+.

According to the buzz I've read, that is supposed to be one of the very best two way, two driver speakers to own.  At least if you're into a variety of kinds of music.

The PB1i and OB1/OB1i's are three-ways while the FB1 / FB1+ / FB1i's are two-ways ( I've owned the FB1i and they are very good. The FB1 was PMC's first entry into the home hi-fi market ). PMC has many other great two-ways in the stable including the "i" series stand-mounts and the GB1i floor-stander, the fact 3 & 8 ( I currently own the fact 8 and it is stunning ) and most recently the Twenty series with both stand-mounts and floor-standers, all two-ways. Yup, I loves me some PMC's !  :thumb:

You are absolutely correct Diamond Dog having owned the OB1i’s and now have the PB1i’s.  I took a chance (pretty safe) and ordered the PB1i’s on spec as the only real change from the OB1i’s was the extra woofer which I hoped would enable me to move the PB1i’s farther away from the front wall.  I wanted more low bass for organ music in particular but also to prevent a strange hum interference from my Torus RM20 BAL Power Conditioner being picked up by the crossover of the speaker that was close to the Torus P.C. even with the speaker cables disconnected.  My amplifier (Bryston 4B SST) had to be drawing current from the Torus.

PB1i’s solved the hum problem and the much improved low bass with the speakers well away from the Torus.  Interestingly the already great mid range and higher frequencies seemed smoother and more articulate even though I believe the only change was the extra woofer.

I was at TAVES in Toronto and spent some time talking to the PMC Canadian distributor guys sharing space with Bryston.  I wondered if I could improve the PB1i’s to the Signature Edition spec which has an improved crossover which I wondered if I could install as the veneer is ugly IMO…..only light cherry for me.  I’m waiting for an answer on this.

I was also wondering about the pb1 drivers. PMC tells little or nothing in their literature . Some other forum mentioned a higher grade of dome tweeter is used over the ob1i..

I'm pretty sure the PB1I and OB1i use the same 27mm soft dome tweeter developed by PMC and SEAS. It's a great- sounding unit.

If the PB1i has the same tweeter in it that my MB2is do, then the high end should be terrific. I upgraded from the MB2s, on spec, on the basis of the new tweeter, and got what I was looking for, and overall a much more balanced sound.

I demoed the PB1i and OB1i and I agree.  Dispite the only difference being the extra woofer and bigger box the PB1i was noticably smoother and more articulate.

I was going to get the OB1i to go with my CB6i centre but now I have to convince my better half that the PB1i is not THAT much bigger.

The OB1i, PB1i, and their respective signature models use the same dome mids and tweets.

The impetus for the development of the PB1i was to capture the EB1i performance in a smaller package...

Very good to see happy PMC owners!  8)

I am also looking into PMC speakers and friend of mine recommended EB1i. Anyone has experience or opinion about EB1I relative to IB or MB series? I read somewhere that EB1i does not have mid-range driver that of IB or MB series.

Thanks for your help.

good choice, other than the EB1 is discontinued. I would move up to the IB2i can't go wrong with it

I agree you can't go wrong with the IB2i, but the MB2i, if you can stretch your budget, is even better.

Sad to say, the Eb1i is indeed discontinued.
