When I saw the second article I raced over to newegg and Tiger Direct, but it was too late   :evil:

I did snag 2 7200RPM 3TB Hitachi drives from Amazon at a decent price, but could find NOTHING else at a reasonable price.

This order of course got cancelled.

The drives I bought said "2 left Hurry!" on the Amazon website. It turned out to be fulfilled by The Price Pros, "We're among Amazon's Top 5 Resellers".

So Amazon said that the vendor controlls the inventory not them. I called BS.

Got the team lead on the line and I had to explain to him that they (Amazon) had the drives in stock for a 50% mark-up, and explained how this was not right.

He was able to give me $40 off of 2 alternate 3TB drives (I think the same drives, retail version)

When I ordered with him on the phone I saw the $40 credit. I ordered the 2 drives but it limited me to 1 drive!

At least the 1 drive with retail packaging was cheaper than 1 bare drive at yesterdays price   :evil:

Yeah the timing on this really sucks; I was hoping to get 4 or so 2tb drives for <$50 each on Black Friday.

Looked up my last order from newegg - Western Digital Caviar Green WD20EARS 2TB SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive $79.99

To buy it today from new egg - $229.99

Amazon has it for $148.

The company I used to work for, HTI, had their assembly plant flooded. They make a large percentage of the suspensions used by many hard-disc drive manufacturers like Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba and others.

Fortunately, stuff got moved to Eau Clair, Wisconsin (where almost all of the part manufacturing is done), before the final curtain came.

Not a good time for any company to lose production time, delivery commitments and the cost of avoiding those pitfalls.

Hey! 

     It is very bad flooding there in Thailand. I was born in Thailand and I can't recall seeing flood this bad. This is one for the history.  :(

     As for the HDD price. I'm pretty sure that once the production there start to pick up again it will eventually come down but it will take sometime to do so.

     Honestly I was looking to pick up a 2TB for back up drive for a while but look like I'm too late. Well, I just have to wait than. There are HDD from China but personally I prefer one from Thailand... yeah, I'm a bit bias I guess.  :lol:

    As a Thai... now in NYC... I'm sure they will ride this out and get things back up again together.

I was unaware the flooding are this bad. In this country there is the great tube builder SAC-Thailand, which made exquisite output trafos.

ummm not to be a dick or anything but when death and destruction is raining down, it looks a little insensitive to start a "damn there goes my low prices" thread.

I don't think anyone was being insensitive to death and destruction from a weather related tragedy, rather more how something happening a half a world away can raise havoc on global economies.
