Reluctantly selling my Salk Ht-3s.  Just to much bass for my smallish room. Downsizing to smaller speakers.
I figured I'll post here before I put them on Audigon in a couple of weeks.
They look and sound wonderful.

How big is your listening room? ACI also makes a low-pass RCA line level filter at 65Hz...I believe they're something like $40/pr if you wanna give it a shot. Good luck.

I'd contact Salk for suggestions how to tone down the low frequency output and better balance the speakers in your room.  It may as simple as adding a resistor on the inputs.

I got something for you to try.  Pull you speakers out some more and nearer together.  Don't worry, this is not going to change the width of your stage (but may add depth) cause of what we're gonna do next.  Take that nice leather sofa sitting against(!) the wall and move it to the attic.  Replace it with a single chair three or four feet off the back wall and begin adjusting your speaker position so the legs of your triangle are equilateral with your new listening position.  It's not that your speakers have too much bass, it's that it's loading up the room the way things are now.  You gotta get off that back wall.  Lastly, diffuse your back wall.  We can talk about that using some of the treatments you have now if you're willing to try this.

Plus, what the other guys have said, perhaps.  Indeed, your speakers are beautiful.

Bass traps!!

I had (still have) tons of bass traps and the HT3s were unlistenable in my room, they were that boomy.  However, I've completely redone the room (and I'm using a tube front end now), flipping the room completely around.  Now, they no longer are boomy.  It may be a situation issue.

First off, I would like to thank everybody for the suggestions and help. Maybe I should explain  myself a little better. The speakers aren't terriblably boomy, but they can overload the room at higher volumes.
 
I'm in this hobby about 35 years, so maybe give me the benefit, that I might know how to set up speakers. My room is just about a perfect square (bad). I use an XTZ room analyzer to help with the set up. Where they are now gives me the smoothest response. I really can't put then on a different wall. My dedicated outlets are on the front wall,so that's where they are staying.

When I first recieved the speakers I had a Rives equalizer.It took care of the bass modes I had at around 40 and 80hz. My system has a lot of resolution and the Rives wasn't totally colorless, it added grain and the soundstage was less open, so I sold it.

I stuffed the ports which Jim said was OK. It helped, but still have that problem with those modes.

Jimdgoulding, I wish i could get off the back wall. Room not big enough. Speakers are 41/2 feet into the room and I am 91/2 feet away from speakers. Can't really get any closer.

Big Red, my room is fully treated and I do have bass traps. I borrowed my friends diffusers didn't really help.

Don't get me wrong the sound is wonderful. Some AC members who heard my system said that it is the best they ever heard them sound.

I love Jim's speakers. I had a deposit for the Soundscape 10's, which Jim said would load the room better.
But,unfortunately things are a little tight right hence another reason for selling my speakers.

Ok, so please just post if you interested in buying or related to that.

Joe, don't shoot just yet.  Your room is 17.5' in length (right?), your speakers are out 4.5', that leaves 13'.  That's if your speakers are 4.5' out from their front.  If it's from their back you still have a generous distance to play with.  If you bring them closer together you can move forward.  It's all relative.  It would seem that you can do a 7' equilateral triangle, or 6' or some distance inbetween.  Remember, it's all relative.  Heck, Joe, mine is 5'!  The entire front of my 12' wide room is alive with imagery and music and yours will be, too.  Nothing ventured, nuthin gained.  Peace.

ps- Hope you don't have to sell those.  Sell your car and get a used moped.  Truly, I hope all is well or getting better.

  Jim, no the depth is only 15ft. The back wall is 17.5. Really wouldn't want to sit closer with a 3way speaker. Need some distance for drivers to integrate.

True, but do you really know at what point your drivers would sound like individual sources.  Your most directional drivers are pretty tightly grouped.  The length of my room is 15', also, so I understand your concern.  The centerpoint of my tweeters is 54" from the wall behind them, and my ears are 60" off the wall behind me.  I could go a bit larger with my spacing but my room is only 12' wide.  Besides, there is simply no need.  The breadth and depth my soundfield is very good.  As your room is wider, you could swing a 6' triangle and see.  Guess you'd have to use your sofa but that would get you respectively off the wall.  I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.  It's been my experience that when you move your seat closer your soundfield expands contrary to what less experienced listeners assume.

I tried that Jim. It's like your sitting in the soundfield. I prefer a more midhall soundstage. Everybody has different taste.

Heard that.  Bout row 10 around here with how I have my speakers placed and depending on the volume setting and that's the setting I most go for.  You could do what I do and that's put a couple pieces of tape on the floor, one at the apex of an equilateral triangle for listening to classical or recordings made on location and another 5" deeper behind my chair for studio recordings, typically.  When the tolerances are tight, that small of a distance can matter a good deal and easily heard on vocals.  Bottom line, I'm just trying to suggest you start placing your speaks and buttocks where I'm real sure that your room will be less of a problem.
