« on: 18 Oct 2011, 02:35 am »
I am ripping my CD collection to FLAC files via dbpoweramp. I have one CD that the software can not seem do anything with, it is Cassandra Wilson - Thunderbird, Bluenote records. the only thing it can do is count the # of tracks is there some sort of copy protection on this disc?

thanks for the knowledge update

best

You might try EAC and or a different DVD/BlueRay drive. It also sounds like dB poweramp is not retrieving any meta-data from the web. Can the program go out the door and access the web to retrieve meta-data from online data bases?

There is no Copy Protection on music CDs that I'm aware of.

This is likely a software glitch somewhere in the chain.

let's try a few things:

1) can you rip the CD on another computer or with a different program on the same computer?

2) can another CD work with dbpoweramp immediately after the trouble Wilson CD?

3) have you forced DBpoweramp to get metadata by clicking the button in the upper left?

hope this helps, let us know either way

out of the 400 CD's I copied this is the only one have trouble with. Other programs can't seem to play it either. There is a pop up piece of software that is on the CD that asks some questions I'll get a screen shot of the window and post it.

I have a similar CD, Spyrogyra's Carnaval.....i tired DbPoweramp, EAC, several other rippers, it rips ok  with many errors and takes forever...then plays with skips and tics and pops....

I have tried 4 other pcs, with different vendors cd and dvd burners, and external USB Cd drives....

I am 100000% positive its the cd.

I one day will go buy another cd and try again...but its not a cd that i listen to anymore from the hundreds I have...and have ripped...its this ONE cd!!

Aint technology great!!

I ripped about 800 CDs with dBpoweramp, and had a few with this same problem on one or several tracks.  Never one that wouldn't rip **anything**, though.

Sometimes, a good cleaning helped, other times re-ripping the affected tracks a couple times made it through, and on at least a couple, nothing helped.  All of these "play" ok on a CDP or directly from the computer CD drive, but who knows what the error correction is doing to the music on those tracks?

You might try to go into the options section of the ripping software and look for the sub-section covering non-standard CDs there might be a way to rip the CD if you tell the software that the CD deviates from the RED BOOK standard.
I haven't had to try this option so I don't know if it will work for you or not.

Never seen that before. What happens if you use the " Save Album " button on that piece of software ? Have you explored the " Extras " button ?

Discogs lists the import version of this CD as copy protected...

Google Sony or Blue Note CD copy protection for info on how to bypass the copy protection.

thanks AB I thought it might be something like that. I have noticed that some of the Blue Note records do not have the standard "Compact Disc" logo.

I understand they can't because they are not the same CD spec. when copy protection is used. This is the only CD I have an issue with, I might just use a CD player when I want to listen to it.

I once tried to rip a Foo Fighters CD that was copy protected. I searched a bit online and read that when you loaded the CD into your computer the CD would only play or be read by it's own, resident on the CD, player. This player also prevented you from copying the disc. Or if you did copy it, it would sound distorted - clicks and pops and gaps.

The work around was to load the CD while holding down the Shift or CTRL key (don't remember exactly) which would prevent the CD from autoloading its program and allow the disc to be read and ripped by EAC or whatever.

Give it a try. It worked for that FF Cd.

I think this may make the computer treat the disc as a data disc with music on it,just a theory.

I have a Blue note CD from Anita Baker, "My Everything" that is copy protected. Using standard rippers didn't work, so I made an iso image just on the hard disk.
Then extracted the audio as a wav files. It was necessary to add all the tags manually, but at least all the music is in one piece and it sounds terrific.

Although probably many ISO makers exist, I used MagcISO and used its internal audio extractor. Trust this helps!
