TTWeights clamp for VPI Classic I
« on: 17 Oct 2011, 05:07 pm »
Just got this clamp (see link)  for my Classic I. Much heavier, and threaded for the VPI spindle. Immediate differences I hear are subtle: increase in 'weight' to the music, and seemingly better speed stability. Any other VPI users try TTweights clamps, or have other anecdotes to share? So far, I have not damaged any of the label sections on LPs; this was a concern as the entire weight will spin against the label as it tightens down.  Do not have a periphery ring clamp. I dont have any really warped LPs, so cannot perform a harsh test for clamping down warps.

I have the outer (older copper one) from TTWeights on my VPI Classic.

I think copper got so pricey that TTWeights changed to another material a year ago or so.

I don't use a large inner clamp because the benefit of a van Alstine outrigger on my Grado outweighs it's benefit.

The benefit of any inner clamp I have found to be small.  The benefit of the outer clamps are really much more easy to hear the benefits from  :thumb:

Not sure if it damps the vinyl itself to a lower frequency and this is beneficial or taming warps helps tracking for the cartridge and arm...but the benefits of an outer clamp are a nice lift for vinyl playback.

Mark, I have had two VPI clamps from TT Weights and actually sold the copper ring to John, and really don't like them as much as they don't make room for the washer to go underneath.  You can use it without the washer though..but I prefer to have the "suction" that the VPI clamps give.  Also, heavier doesn't necessary means it dampens better.  It's about materials as well.
