Amount of putty on RM40's from the factory??
« on: 24 Apr 2004, 10:47 pm »
Since I bought my RM40's used, I have no idea how much putty has been removed.  I thought about removing all the putty and adding new putty in the original amount and tuning from that point.

1) Is this a good idea?
2) If so, how much do they come from the factory with?

Thanks for your help.  I don't post much, but I read and learn from every post you guys submit on this VMPS forum.

Locate a roll of Mortite or similar rope putty at a hardware store and measure off 8".  That's the starting point.  Attach directly to the center of the PR.

Blue or yellow tack works just as well, but do understand this is the most crucial tuning you'll ever be making adjustments to . Get this right before even starting to play with the pots . One thing I 've discovered is that both sides need to be equal. Meaning don't compensate more putty to the speaker closer to a wall.

Good luck fine tuning, it'll payoff.

Puddy

Thanks Brian and Audiochief for the information.  I have a roll of the puddy.  Could not find it at Lowes or Home Depot, found it at ACE Hardware.

I think the original owner has it close because the RM40's sound amazing.  Everytime I think it's perfect, I learn a new thing to do that makes it better than I thought possible.

I have to know for sure the puddy is "exact" or it will drive me crazy.  I am just now getting to the point where I can tell if one of the pots is not where it should be.  This is going to be an adventure.

I just raised the cables and power lines off the floor about 3" and WOW, what a differance!  I am having celing to floor curtains 12' wide being made to go behind the speakers.  I have ordered UHD Polycrystal amp stands for my Wadia 850 and my Audio Research Amp.

I can tell now, Ampzillias, RMX's, and who knows what kind of source, are in the future.

What a great journey.
