My advice is read the book.
When I was younger, I loved the books. Now, 25+ years later, I'm not so sure. I'm trying to make it through the original now. One of the Musketeers kills his own wife (at least ostensibly). They beat their servants. They kill people with no remorse, regret, or reflection. I realize this may have been the way it was back then, but it's disconcerting. I'm having a hard time finishing the book (in fact, read two other books while trying to finish The Three Musketeers).
The movie looks a little over the top to me, but I have only seen a trailer.
