What CDP specs are a good match for Tempest?

What CDP is a good match for the Tempest?  Is impedence matching important?  If so, what output impedence is good for the Tempest.    Also, what is the minimum and maximum input voltage of the Tempest?

I'm getting my Lorelei's soon to go with my Tempest and Stratus monos.  I have a cary 303/200 CDP which is nice, but I'm just throwing this out there.  The Cary is my first nice CDP, and I'm wondering if 1) spec-wise is it a good match for the Tempest, and 2)  What specs and players in general are a good match for my system.

Impedance is largely a non-issue, unless the source has a poorly designed tube output stage.

High output level could be an issue, but magnitude sufficient to drive the internal buffer amp (OPA-604) into clipping (distortion) is unlikely in most consumer- or audiophile-oriented products.  The buffer amp is between the source selector relays and the volume control, so it is possible to overdrive it without overdriving the Tempest output.

My Marantz SACD-8260 player has unusually high output level.  I haven't run it with my Tempest yet, as the latter is out of service pending return to Klaus for an upgrade.  Perhaps I'll have a chance to check this combination on the bench before the Tempest goes back to Indy ... the Marantz is not a problem with my Acurus RL-11 because that pre has no buffer amp before the volume control.

Karl...
I have the Marantz sa-8260 running with the Tempest and the Monos...and its a great Combo... I have to say.
I have not heard the clipping and I play pretty loud too.
So, you should be OK!!!
good luck...
Sucks to have the Tempest out of service, what's wrong with it?

Sonny:

There's nothing wrong with my Tempest.  On line-level sources, there's no audible difference between it and my (modded) Acurus.  The Tempest really shines on MC phono and will send my Acurus P10 phono stage (also modded) to Audiogon in due course.

Problem is spouse, who expects remote volume control, which the Acurus RL-11 has.  Solution is obvious, retrofit Tempest for it.  But Klaus's announcement of the "Extreme" upgrade and my middle ear surgery (successful) last month postponed that a bit.  Since my hearing has been obtuse during recovery, there's been no reason to balance the Tempest's MC phono advantages against its lack of remote (spouse isn't "into" vinyl).  So the Acurus pair remains active and I'll set up the Tempest upgrades w/Klaus this week.

SA-8260 is another matter.  It would not read ToC on 14% of my CD library, including (natch) too many of my wife's faves.  It went into the shop a week ago ... we'll see how that goes.  Does sound great on RBCD, though.  Fun part of this was that it arrived when I couldn't hear ... she raved about how much better her piano concerto and solo favorites sounded (well, those with ToCs that read) ... so no criticism for spending the bucks ... Wow! ... rare treat!

Thanks for your comments on the SA-8260 compatibilty.  Audio's a part of my "day job" and I'm a "headroom fanatic", so it will be interesting to test the Tempest/Marantz compatibility both on the bench and with the (repaired) ears.
