I'm in. Nothing lost or misplaced yet. Download was pretty quick - about a half hour.

C-Net has a list of links for download depending on your device. Click on the appropriate link, downloads quickly, then you drag it to your iPhone in I-tunes and the rest goes smoothly. Just follow instructions and answer questions.

The upgrade went flawlessly on my ipad. It seems faster.  It also seems like sq is better with my headphones. Probably just my imagination, but for now I'm going with it.  Also, i was just reading that an untethered jailbreak for ios5 is soon to hit.

Whoa! Just noticed the tabbed feature in Safari...totally cool.

Won't Siri only be for 4S users? Will my regular 4 access her?

Paul

Dr. Paul,

Siri is an app you can access and download for your current iPhone4 (I have it on mine).  It's free 8)

It'll direct you to movies and movie times, local restaurant, places of interest and much, much ,more...but as it's not imbedded into your phone (as it is on the latest iPhone4) you can't talk to your phone so much as ask Siri to look on the internet for what you want.

If that doesn't make sense - just download her and it probably will then

As of today, the siri app is not supposed to function anymore. Have you checked yours? So the only way to get Siri functionality is to get an iPhone 4S.

sonofagun....i get this msg now: 'Sorry, a problem occurred receiving responses from the server'

It does indeed appear to now be non-functional.

They used me as a beta to imporove it's functionality and then unleashed it on the paying world beyond.  How dare Apple - I feel - very violated now  8)

TCG - You've been Jobbed. Given your business demands and scheduling load (not to mention tax deductibility), you should probably bite the bullet and buy a 4s. Siri looks like a godsend for those "on the go".

I keep thinking about getting one but I'm 14 months from my next upgrade opportunity and I don't do a damn thing in life that even requires the iPhone 4 I already have. I bought it mostly for the voice quality. So far, aside from a perceived increase in speed of operation, nothing in IOS 5 has changed for me. I still only do a couple of phone calls and texts per day and use the map function occasionally. I vastly prefer my iMac for surfing and I'm home about 20 hours a day anyway. It's hard to make doing nothing any more convenient.

Siri could be your "Chair Girl".

Yeah - mine's only a few months old, too (maybe a year now) and I don't want to pay the penalty for breaking the contract and I don't find enough differences in 4G to 4S to merit and additional $199 charge for a new phone + penalties.

I read this 4S model is mostly a way for iPhone3 users to find reason to upgrade and that most are past their 2 year contract now.  Sounds plausible as a marketing plan - and keeps iPhone3 users from maybe leaping to something newer and fresher in the Android world. I'll wait to see what iPhone 5 brings....

I was a loyal, but mostly disgruntled, Blackberry user for about 7 years before that.  I still miss the better (patented) push for emails it has over the iPhone.  But everything else is so vastly better on the iPhone I simply don't care now.  The various Blackberry's were a reasonably capable smartphone; the iPhone is truly a little mini-computer in your hands  :thumb:

Fact is, I didn't use Siri so much as I thought it was cool.  For a phone, having Siri built in is neat and likely helpful. But, once Apple bundles with their laptops (it's coming), it's gonna' make my choice between a PC and a Mac a lot more complex.  Right now the same performance in an Apple laptop is about 20% difference from a PC....too high a spread to pay Apple for their name.

Samsung computers are essentially clones of Mac's now right down to the last details (except name on the lid); save the operating system is Windows.  About 20% retail spread between 'em.

But, throw Siri in the mix and there is a value-added that is hard to ignore and might make that 20% spread more agreeable for me (and I assume, others). Apple has a winner in Siri for sure for many.

Now that I've had a chance to live with ios 5 for about a week, I've come to a very solid conclusion - iOS 5 is not ready for prime time.  Safarri crashes on me several times a day, is super slow and sometimes just hangs up for minutes at a time.

It 's unfortunate that one of the last things Jobs said was, "It just works." Unless iOS 5 was designed to frustrate the user, it does not work very well.

Perhaps something happened on installation? Did you try backing up your iPhone or IPad, restoring, and reinstalling?

My experience is completely different from yours, I feel like IOS5 is really sleek, and I haven't had any major crashes, hold ups, or skips since using it. I have an IPhone 4.

Sorry to hear you are having trouble with it.

IOS5 gets a bad grade from me too. I can't upgrade my apps or buy anything from iTunes store with my phone because it has misspelled a word in my email address and there seems to be no way to correct it. My wife has the same problem with hers except it has her in gmall instead of gmail.

I spent 2 hours on the phone with Apple Tech Support and they were unable to fix the problem. Apparently they and their servers are on severe overload because of IOS5, ICloud and 4S all happening concurrently.

I cheerfully pay a premium for Apple products to avoid these Microsoft kind of problems. Looks like that strategy failed this time.

I'm an iPad 1 user.  Apparently, the problem I discussed is being talked about a lot on the various Apple forums, so at least I'm not alone and a fix should be around the corner.  One of the suggestions that was made on a forum was to delete your iCloud service, as it is most probably the cause for crashes.  I've done this and will see if helps.

I upgraded to iOS 5 on my iPad 1. I haven't had any issues other than Safari not being able to consistantly go back to the previous page when selecting the back button in Safari. With iCloud I set it to back up to my computer instead of the internet, since I was going to wait until that was less problematic.

Why does iTunes keep opening up on my PC?  It's really annoying.
