Sorry to say that the FCC shut down my favorite station, Kyote Radio... which operated as a 5 watt powerhouse for the ghost town of Terlingua for 10 years that I know of, maybe longer.  The ladies of the community did impose regulations, insisting that they stop referring to the F%*^ing FCC on the air, but that other nearly equally descriptive adjectives were acceptable.  For some reason, the feds decided to travel to this little town near Mexico last year and threatened to imprison the offenders.  My days of hearing Rachmaninoff, Oscar Peterson, Dire Straits, and the Light Crust Dough Boys - all back to back with zero commercials- is over.

I forgot to mention one minor detail.  As an issue of principle, they never had a license ... sort of a "we don't need no stinkin' license" kind of thing.  They are looking for a way to broadcast from Mexico.

Similar to the S Clark story of Terlingua radio, is the story of KTAX. My accountants are a couple of Italian-American Deadheads from Long Island who did pro bono accounting for KGNU community radio in Boulder, Colorado. When KGNU relocated and upgraded their equipment, Mike and Eugene acquired their old broadcast gear and set up KTAX to play whatever was being played in their office all day. That was mostly DAT bootlegs of the Dead but not exclusively so. The office had a pair of Klipsch K-horns and a bank of Rowland gear they got from me and a wood stove for heat. The listening area was confined to about 3 square miles of mountain valley, half of which was a reservoir. Still, they broadcast during office hours 5 days a week for ten years and, as far as I know, no one ever spoke a word over KTAX radio. It just started up one day, was discovered by word of mouth and stopped broadcasting abruptly when the FBI showed up and let them know what the penalties would be for continuing to share their music over the air.
Just like the Terlingua example, you have to ask yourself, "Who were they hurting?".

Current favorites are KVNF in Paonia, Colorado and KZMU in Moab, Utah.

Looks like nobody cares much for Clear Channel.

I almost forgot about the most classic and powerful R&B radio station that used to broadcast from Ciudad Acuna, MX.  Said they were in Del Rio, TX (across the Rio Grande) but that is where their tower was.  Can't remember their call letters (this was like in the 50's) but you will recognize the name of one of their DJ's . . Wolfman Jack.  There was another from Shreveport, LA and one from Memphis.  R&B and some gospel, if I recall.  Texas girl Angela Strehli immortalizes those stations on the opening track of her album, Blonde and Blue.

WSMR 89.1/WUSF 89.7 HD Radio http://www.wusf.usf.edu/music/channel/classical_music (greater Tampa area) is the only preset on my Yamaha & Sony HD Radios.
Otherwise it's XM when it's radio time.

Ahhh, yes, Wolfman Jack! I don't remember if I ever actually heard him growing up in the 50's but I certainly heard about him.
Interestingly enough there is an FM oldies station near me in Hammond, LA that has a DJ that calls himself Bayou Wolfman. As soon as I heard him and his buddy, Al T, it was obvious to me that they were both from the New Orleans area. He does a very good imitation of Wolfman Jack. I figure it must be real because his voice could never last if he had to try to sound like that.  :thumb:

XERF, Del Rio TX. We listened to the Wolfman all the time in the early and mid 60's. The transmitter was 250,000 watts so it easily reached into Colorado and Missouri.

It was the early 70's and music in the Detroit area was awesome!! This is where I learned about progressive rock and what we now call classic rock!! WABX was a great station!! So was WRIF, WWWW(W4). But the best station was CJOM out of Canada. They played music no one else would play.

Enjoyed WNEW-FM 102.7 back then...

Still catch Vin Scelsa on a Saturday night on WFUV...Idiot's Delight...always an interesting show.

Hey Wolfie...

For us Lawng Islanders back in the day, don't forget WLIR 92.7 (later became WDRE) and WBAB 102.3.  At the time, we just called it Rock and Roll, now called Classic Rock.  WBAB still going strong with same format.

Man, i really liked that station.  I didn't know about their demise.  When in the Big Bend I also have enjoyed the Marfa public radio station.  S Clark, are you a Terlinguite?

In Austin my fave is KUT and am very happy to see that Jody Denberg has found a place with them after corporate idiots screwed up KGSR.

Was this the station that ZZ Top refered to as "The X" (Radio X)?

"I heard it, I heard it, I heard it on the X."

Last time I liked any radio station was quite some time ago in Detroit: WABX and WDET (Dave Dixon, Ed Love, Judy Adams(?)). Dislike all I've heard since.

WDET was my go to station up until several years ago, and sadly don't find radio worth listening to these days other than in the background.  WDET moved away from a lot of the music programs and dropped the host of my favorite show, Martin Bandyke. Did a lot of live in studio performances and even put out several in-studio CDs for promotions... if you can find them they are great.  They've since gotten back some of the music, and Ed Love is still doing his thing and Ann Delisi has a good show.

Dave Dixon... now there was a dj I really liked, one of the WABX "Air Aces"  Had a great show on WDET again in the '80s. I think he showed up on another station for a short period but he was always controversial (remember him making an onair comment along the lines of "Remember kids, the c in rap is silent" after a song). Sadly he passed away in 99.

It was the early 70's and music in the Detroit area was awesome!! This is where I learned about progressive rock and what we now call classic rock!! WABX was a great station!! So was WRIF, WWWW(W4). But the best station was CJOM out of Canada. They played music no one else would play.

I'm right there with you Darth and Rockadanny... I think there are still some WABX and W4 stickers on the inside cabinet doors of my parents basement. I'll never forget the morning W4 changed formats and I woke up to my alarm clock playing country instead of album rock.

In places I've lived, I would have to say my two favorites (both in Houston TX, and both long gone) were 96.5 KAUM & 97 Rock (I _still_ see their bumper stickers around town, and not all of them are bootlegs).

Casting a wider net, two from New Orleans: WRNO (RIP... I would pick them up on shortwave) & WWOZ (thankfully, they 'netcast).

Well, it's a ZZ Top kinda station I would think.  Laura says the call letters began with an X so it might very well be.
