The files in question were downloaded from HD tracks. It was a free sample. I wanted to see the difference before buying any. The original download will not play nor will one that was converted to 24/96 non compressed.

That may be the issue.  Try another free download, or contact HD Tracks, and see if those play.  The ones you received may have been corrupted for some reason.

I agree I would try a variety of files from different sources.  I've played purchased 24/96 files (i.e. McCartney, Harrison), 24/192 files (dumbed down by the software to 24/96) from a Linn records sampler, etc.  Hopefully as soon as I get a new PC, over a period of time I'll be digitizing more and buying more hi-rez downloads

Jeez, the files play just fine when Mark uses the Touch's onboard DAC.  The Bel Canto 2 DAC that he tried to use to play the files is from 2002 and won't play them.  The Bel Canto support person that Mark asked is being totally dense.  The files will never be able to be played by that DAC as it can only decode 24/96 in the DAD format.  There is nothing wrong w/ the files, the issue is the Bel Canto DAC.  DAD is 24/98 audio recorded on a DVD (no video.)

24/96 DAD's are no different than any 24/96 PCM signal.  They are just an example of what was available back then (including 24/96 DVD-Video too, like Neil Young Greatest Hits, etc).  If the Bel Canto can read 24/96 DAD's it can read anything 24/96 normal PCM (files, etc).  Sounds like the DAC is the issue; it's digital input is set wrong or something.  I assume this is coax (rca/bnc) and not toslink (optical)?  Did your successful borrowed DAC use same cables?

Yes it is RCA coax.

Good point, no I used different cables on the borrowed one. I'll give that a try.

Thanks,

Mark

Well tried it with the same interconnect and it's the same. The BC is not reading the tracks.

Well wanted to post an update just in case someone else may have this problem. I tried some other coax and could not get it to play 96/24 files on any of them. Bought a Lifatec Silflex and it works. Have not yet compare 16 bit files to the coax but it is working.
