Which amp(s) for 3.0?
« on: 4 Oct 2011, 02:59 am »
Due to an odd room configuration, I don't have room for rear surrounds, so I run a 3.0 setup (L/R/C).  I'm planning to upgrade to Salk HT-2TLs with a HT2C in the near future and while my Denon AVR can run 4-ohm loads, it isn't spec'd for it.  I've been looking at AVA gear for a while but can't decide on which amp to use.

I heard the FetValve 600R driving Salk SoundScapes at the California Audio Show and was blown away.  After that experience, I've been very tempted to get a FetValve 400R but that leaves a puzzle for the center channel.  I could run it via the Denon's internal amps, but I eventually plan to replace the Denon with a pre-pro so I'd prefer to not rely on its amps.  AVA doesn't offer a mono amp so I'd need to either go for a different brand or waste a channel on an Insight.

The Insight 240/3 seems like a natural fit for this scenario, but I'm worried it won't be the same as the FetValve 400R.  Are the differences big enough that I should go with the 400R and figure out a solution for the center?  If so, should I try to stick with AVA for the center or look elsewhere?

If it were me, I'd stick with the 400R. To your point, the R amps are damned tempting.  :thumb:

As for the other channel, I have a buddy who has a few Outlaw Audio M2200 mono's he uses to rotate all kinds of different things through and around his room. For two channel listening, the 400R will be the only way to go; the mono won't be in play. The 2200s work really well in this type of supporting roll.

JMHO, YMMV, etc.

Have fun,

Jerry

The M2200 looks like it would work.  Now to order a 400R before the prices go up and they switch over to the silver faceplates.

What they said!  That pancake outlaw amp was taylor made for this ap.  You can occasionaly find them used on audiogon or look for a used adcom, parasound, B&K or something similar.

I had a similar dilemma. I have HT2-TLs powered by an Ultra+ Double 550 and recently purchased an HT2C.

I ended up buying a used 260ex amp from Frank.  I'm using 1 channel of it for around 190 watts if I remember correctly.  Sounds great.  I think I paid around $500 for it, and would much rather have an AVA amp than anything from outlaw or similarly priced emotiva.

If i were you, I would get the 400R since my main priority is 2 channel audio.  I wouldn't compromise on that in order to have the front 3 channels on identical amps.

I'm currently using an eastern electric DAC, Ultra+ Preamp, Ultra+ double 550 amp, and salk HT2-TLs.

My dad is using an eastern electric DAC, Insight preamp, insight 260 amp, and salk Songtowers with the ribbon tweeter upgrade

His systems sounds very similar to mine when the low end extension of my speakers is ignored.  His lacks some of the "magic" mine has, but it might not be worth the extra cost to some people.  Every aspect of the sound is slightly improved on my system, but it's not a drastic difference.

Thanks for all the replies.  I've already put in an order for a 400R.  Now I need to find things to distract me for 4 weeks until it is ready.  Shouldn't be too hard since my wife just brought home a bunch of Ikea cabinetry for me to install....
