The A5+ is has essentially the same drivers and amplifier as the A5, but adds:

1. Remote control
2. Dual audio outputs
3. Enhanced thermal management (heatsink on rear of powered speaker)

So, this is pretty cool, especially a great way to get good sound in a 2nd system or a PC setup.

IMO, active speakers have inherent advantages over non-active speakers, but audiophiles shy away from them because they may have already bought an expensive amp, so an active speaker in the main system is usually a no-go.  But, for a 2nd system, they are maybe a way for the active approach to "sneak in" and get people accustomed to their flexibility and inherently superior performance.

Interesting times....

While many powered monitors are "active", i.e. separate amplifiers for woofer and tweeter with an active crossover, my understanding is that the Audioengines have a single amplifier for each channel and employ a passive crossover between the woofer and tweeter.

So although I can attest that the Audioengine speakers do sound good for their price, they do not have the "superior performance" that you are probably accustomed to with truly active (and usually more expensive) speaker setups.

Definitely a no brainer...just add a nice sub and you have a nice 2.1 setup.
