Linn LP12 joke (harsh...I like the LP12)
« on: 30 Sep 2011, 09:32 pm »
The audiophile, on his way to his Linn dealer to have his LP12 adjusted and tweaked for the 50th time, stops at the bank to make a quick cash withdrawal. Figuring that it will only take a couple of minutes he leaves his precious 'table in full view on the back seat of his car. He runs into the bank. Upon returning to his car he notices that one of the windows has been smashed. Oh no!!! he cries in despair and when he looks in he sees: TWO LP12's.

Most folks here are probably too young to know about the Linn LP12 and it's, shall we say, quirkiness.

I was trying not to bite, but failed  :D

Quirkyness?

I haven't needed to tinker with the set up in the 5+ years of ownership.
Horizontal platter, nice vertical pitching on push down all retained.

In my experience I believe that the Linn's reported failings are somewhat exaggerated.

Maybe from new there might be a settling down period  :dunno:
Certainly when bought used from a careful owner, I've had no issues at all.

I did'nt respond to the OP because I saw the title, expected to have a chuckle, but alas no - just didn't find it funny.

There must be better Linn related jokes out there?

PS I ain't no through and through Linny by the way - the LP12 is the only bit of Linn kit I've got and one of three TT's.
In fact my Dual gets more usage than the Sondek.

As an LP12 owner for 20 years I found it funny. Back to the dealer once in 20 years only to install the Lingo power supply. Worth every penny.  :thumb:

With four AVID tables, a Rega P9 and a Zu SL1200, I wouldn't be categorized as a Linnie either, but I do really enjoy my LP-12.

No single table/arm/cart combination does it all.

+1 for the last sentence (emphasis added).

Traded my LP12 for the Sony PSX-800 (I think that's the model) Direct Drive servo-linear tracker, which except for its feedback/isolation issue is my second favorite table of several I've owned.  When a Sony servo failed I replaced it with a new Denon DP59L, Denon's later answer to the Sony 800 but with servo pivoting arm vs. the Sony's servo linear tracking arm (the DP59L is a classic).

Once setup the LP12 needed no tweaking or adjusting, so I agree its reputation for need of frequent tuning seems unearned.  Still, the joke made me laugh because of the LP12 stereotype.

Neil Levinson of Fanfare Magazine turned me on to the LP12 at CES decades ago (whatever happened to Neil?)

At the time Neil was in the middle of his ongoing Fanfare rants against the SOTA Saphire (all versions including the then-high-priced $1600 Star vacuum) for its audible, unacceptably high wow and flutter.  I was smitten with the SOTA at the time for its insanely good isolation from bass feedback.  After meeting Neil at a show, seeing his nose turn up upon seeing the SOTA, I talked with him about the WF in the hall as he lit up a cigarette.

Long and short of it is I ended up agreeing with Neil and traded the SOTA for an LP12.  Please take no offense if you love your old SOTA, but if you play a piano piece and listen on long notes, the WF seems hard to miss.  I think WF is diminished with a thinner belt.

No idea about the later SOTA's.  Above applies only to TT from the old SOTA factory in SE Oakland near the Coliseum (an, um, "lively" and "interesting" neighborhood, lots of pit bulls...an SF fireman co-worker used to work at a firehouse in Oakland nicknamed the "House of Pain"...he and another fireman from Los Angeles explained how gang bangers "deliver" their injured friends for medical help: the firemen are taking a brief break in front of the firehouse, they hear tires screeching in the distance, then a minute later a car screeches to a stop in front of the firehouse, a gang-banger opens the car door, pushes the shot/stabbed friend out of the car onto the street, yells, "Take care of him," and away they go.)

Obviously Alan Perkins then-SOTA foreman/engineer learned many good lessons from his time there.  His later RPM and now Immedia tables are rock solid, probably in the list of top five TT extant.  His top line $25k TT playing on $2500 Immedia Anima speakers at CES a few years ago among the best reproduced sound I've heard (with $6k Immedia arm and prototype Immedia SS class A pre and power amps...the $10k Lyra cartridge didn't hurt).  In pure musical bliss and immersion I preferred it to the $200k Wilson/Bolder digital system I heard minutes before (enjoyable but Alan's was much preferred).   Drummer/musician Alan knows high end well.

PS: Linn's entire series of Chakra power amps (in production since 1999) may be the most underrated components ever (beware: power is rated @ 4-Ohms: "100W" amp = 56W @ 8-Ohms, "200W" = 112W @ 8-Ohms).  IMO Chakra sound like the best OTL but with no current problems.

I thought it is a funny joke. I was gonna post it on the Linn website but I see that the OP is already a member there...

But DaveyW raises a question: how many turntable jokes does anyone know?

And, in line with Linnie madness Davey, what kind of mat is that? Not the original Linn felt? For shame! :nono: :icon_lol:

Hi Paul,

OK I know it has a British flavour, but this is my sort of humour and it's TT related.

Grammophone

If the link does'nt work pop the below into You Tube search field.

"GRAMMOPHONE - Not The Nine o'Clock News"

I remember watching this when "Not the Nine O'clock News" was on the TV in the late 70's, best comedy since Fawlty Towers which remains my fav.

This sketch still makes me chuckle  :D

Re. the mat - Ahhh! It's a special - Caught and Handcrafted by our very own Bamorin  :thumb:

Deer Hide

Honestly - I can't tell the difference sonically but I like it - Thanks again Bammer  8)

The deer hide mat does not hold a static charge. It presents a slightly different soundstage/tonal balance.
Are the differences night and day........err, no

regarding Linn suspension tuning.........and all sprung tables.  The biggest issue lies in the lower grommet.
the lower grommets usually are made of rubber, and the hole in them where the suspension stud runs is larger than the stud. That allows the lower grommet to get off center, and off square to the stud. Off center, and the spring doesn't see the same load across its diameter. Each spring then can have multiple frequency responces instead of the 2-4hz it was designed to filter to. Sagging grommets allow the spring to be longer on one side, again changing frequency to where it can filter. Multiply three springs times how far off each spring is to perfect tune and the number become quite high. Being that timing on a suspended deck is first controled by the exactness of the springs, and one can see why tuning can be problematic. To the point it becomes a "black art".  I found a simple solution to this. One other forum member has my suspension package mounted on his AR table. The simple solution also does as much, if not more in keeping perfect timing as a speed control device. As the speed (variation) on a suspended belt drive is first governed by the suspension being in perfect horizontal only filtering of acoustic and mechanical feedback.

the simple solution is changing out the lower rubber grommet and adjusting nut to a rigid perch that has the adjusting nut as the exact center of the perch. The spring perch then keeps the bottom of the spring exactly centered to the supension stud, and exactly square to the stud.  Shoot me an e-mail, and I'll shoot you back some photos of this.  If the spring isn't pefectly centered and perfectly square, the filtering down to 2-4hz doesn't happen.
