Freerider's LS6 build
« on: 27 Sep 2011, 09:47 pm »
Woohoo!! :D  It's inevitable now!  I've ordered my LS6 kit (thanks Danny), NoRez (thanks kingdeezie!), round-under bit (thanks mojave), and poly-fill (thanks internet store).

A little less than a month from now, I should be posting pictures of my long awaited LS6's!  I've been looking forward to this moment for over 3 years, when I first saw these speakers on AV123's site.  Empty cabinets have been haunting me in my garage for over a year.  Will post pics of the kit coming together in a week or so.

Thanks all for keeping me motivated and the fire alive!
:banana piano:(Ya, I'm a bit excited about this.)

I'll have to start my own thread since I'm just starting, too. I've been working on some subwoofers which have slowed me down. I finally decided to work on the LS6's last Friday. I put my round under bit in the router and tightened it down. I turned on the router and the bit flew out and hit me in the chest. It cut me in a few places and left a large bruise. If it had hit my neck it might have been fatal. The bit was bent at 90 degrees on the shaft. I'm still not sure what happened.

Yikes!  Glad to hear it wasn't worse!  I'll be sure to be careful when I attach the same bit to my router.

A router is arguably the most dangerous power hand tool there is.

Exciting Times Freerider!

You've got me thinking about No Rez and a Crossover upgrade.

Just keep the router out of my hands.  Yikes!

Congrats! You'll be happy with these. Definitely a good idea to do the no rez & Polyfil before the drivers get installed (I STILL need to finish my polyfil, but it is such a pain in the a$$)

Have fun!

With respect to the router: I had a friend who severed all the tendons and nerves in one wrist using one, and I've been a'feared of 'em ever since. Think it would be nice to have one, then I remember him.

Oh man, glad to hear you are ok, minus a little skin.

Any idea yet what happened? 90 degree bend should leave some witness marks on the tool and/or tooling.

Routers can definitely be dangerous.  It is worthwhile to do a little reading first.  Here are some router safety tips: http://www.amanatool.com/safety/rb-guide-english.pdf

Could that bit have come into contact with something as it was first engaged?  That's the only thing that I can think of that might have caused it to bend like that.  Definitely weird.  I've used a router for decades with no issues, but they are always to be treated with a healthy amount of respect.  All it takes is one lapse. My brother is missing the top 1/2" of one finger due to a radial arm saw. You see a lot of old 9 fingered carpenters.

Wow, Danny's LS6 package got to my house faster than the round-under router bit I ordered!

Time to go home and start cutting No-Rez.

Actually, the bit showed up too.  Here's phase 1, rounding out the inside edges.

Taped for protection. A tip I read from Danny somewhere in these threads.

Phase 2, apply NoRez.

This is a pain in the butt because the AV123 cabinets have a rough texture from overspray all over the inside of the cabinets. When you try to wipe the surface prior to NoRez application, the texture acts like sandpaper and shreds the rag I'm using.  I found I could tear off the NoRez pretty easily after application, so I'm using a polyurethane construction glue, to glue on all the NoRez panels permanently.

This is going to take a while...

I'm cutting the NoRez with a cordless skill saw, which works great.

cn you take a few pics of your bit, and the roundover it made?

on a side note, i used 3m super77 adhesive on the backs of the no rez i installed in some x-mtm's and that stuff worked great. if you have difficulties with the construction adhesive try the 3m stuff, it might make things easier for ya :)

Here's some quick pics with my phone.  Like mojave said, it's a round-under bit.  I bought #6326, which is the 1/4" shank, 3/8" radius.

This picture of the radius edge doesn't really show much, but here it is none-the-less.  It's a 3/8" radius, per Danny's recommendation in another thread.

I've got some super77 I used for the foam on my X-LS build.  I might try that as well.  I went for the other glue, because I'm not sure how permanent the super77 is over time with a heavier material like NoRez.  I'm just trying to make sure it adheres to the walls firmly, and will stay there for decades.
