I need a Cheap and Cheerful DAC asap
« on: 26 Sep 2011, 03:00 pm »
So i finally ordered a new amp(hifimediy T1) and a Dodd buffer. Now i need a real dac to replace my uca 202.

It needs to have USB or optical and run on 12 or 24vdc.  Id like to spend under $200 the cheaper the better.

Fiio-D3

Also consider the Fiio-D5 which has USB input but does not do 192K, only 96K

The Fiio D5 runs on USB bus power, however the Fiio D3 requires a 5VDC supply so some type of voltage regulator or other circuitry will need to be incorporated.

A Musiland Monitor 01US is $90 on Ebay.  They are USB powered and asynchronous. They support up to 24/192KHz.

Good deal. Is a must have for that price.
Go for it!

I believe the musiland is windows-only. Also, it's not a DAC.

My mistake - the 01 US is a DAC, the 01 USD is a USB-SPDIF convertor.

Does anyone have any experience with the Filo D3?  Im thinking about getting it just for now and save up for a better dac.

Jason,
The Monitor 01US sounds very good indeed.   :thumb:

Not sure about MAC OSX, I am a Windows guy.  Works fine with Win 7 and their driver.

I would take the MCM DAC over the Fiio just based on the reviews of the Beresford TC-7510 DAC.  The MCM is an exact copy with the same components.  I think that you will get more milage out of it.

Ive got an original Music Streamer +...

Only does 16/44, but it's yours for $100 if you want it.  Brand new in box.  That will include shipping and PayPal fees.

PM if interested...

I've got a very gently used Music Streamer II+ I'd be willing to part with for $200. Just bought the EE Minimax DAC Plus.

A buddy offered to sell me an UltraFi iRoc for $200 today.  I think that would be outstanding in your price range.  Drop me a PM if you want his email.
