My Oppo DV-981 HD (v2.70) has stopped working. When connected to the power outlet, the power light seems to be purple indicating that both red and blue lights are on. None of the controls are operable. Initially all the LED displays were lit but now none of them are on.

The problem seems to have started when the player was in standby mode for several days without being played. The last time it was used it performed flawlessly.

Any ideas if this is fixable or is should this now go on the galactic electronic trash pile?

Have you tried unplugging and letting it power down for a few minutes? Otherwise, consider calling Oppo support. They are very responsive.

Unplugging and letting it set overnight did not fix anything. I will call Oppo and see what they say.

Not being familiar w/ the player... is there a key combination on the remote (or maybe just holding down the power button on the player for a certain period of time) that serves as a reset?

There is nothing about a reset in the manual and the player is not responding to any remote input. Also holding the power key down does not do anything.

Looks like I will have to wait until I have time on a weekday during regular office hours to get help from Oppo.

Some electronics have to be completely disconnected. Try removing the power cord and any interconnects. Reconnect and then power back up. Also be sure to power down and disconnect your display.

I did that and left it completely disconnected overnight. All wires were removed. I actually opened up the unit to see if I could see if I could visually see if anything was damaged. Looks pristine!

Have you tried swapping the hdmi cable or connecting through component?

I think the problem is more basic in that the unit does not respond at all. with or without any connections the power switch led lights up purple and nothing works. The tray does not open (thankfully I did not have a dvd or cd in there).

I have one with the same symptoms.  It is toast, but I beleive OPPO will fix it for like $50 or something.  Call them for more specific details.  If I remember correctly I think the tech said "power supply" issue.

While on the subject of Oppo, I have a DV970H which will play SACD but will not play Redbook CDs.
  Anyone else have this problem?

My 970H (which is my other Oppo) seems to working fine (touch wood).

I got an email back from Oppo saying that it would be $49 to get an extended warranty which woud then cover the repair. So essentially this toast.

In any case, I am pleased with how quickly they responded via email. Good customer service!

  I'm wondering if I have to change the settings. I'm afraid to do this because I might disenable the SACD playback which is why I use the Oppo at all (as a transport).
