Why would an album be released at 24 bit/88k?

I was just wondering why a new release would be recorded at 24 bit/88k vs 24/96 or 24/192? Still just trying to dip my feet in and understand why.

If it's a download you are referring to, then it is likely that the source was SACD, and Bruce Brown and the folks at Puget Sound who do HDTracks (for example) SACD rips do them at the integer-multiple of DSD, which is 44.1k-based.  Therefore, 24/88.2 or 24/176.4k are the rips.  Give us more details.

Well it is the new Tori Amos Album "Night of Hunters" on HDtracks. I can't link to it since it is blocked by the work's firewall.

I looked online and couldn't find a SACD version available. Deutsche Grammophon is mainly a classical label, maybe that has something to do with it?
