Speaker Hiss?
« on: 20 Sep 2011, 01:17 am »
I have a tube preamp connected to T-amp.  Observed some degree of audible hiss when I use the preamp especially on one speaker.  My tubes are new NOS - a rectifier and two 12AT7s.  Can the hiss be eliminated or at least reduced?

The hiss is probably coming from the NOS 12AT7s. The rectifier will not contribute to the hiss.   JJ 12AT7 gold pin is very good example of that type.  Does anybody have a link to Stuart Yaniger's comparison test of the 12AT7 types?  All tubes hiss to some degree.  Could also be a function of your speakers' sensitivity. Sensitive speakers allow more tube noise to come through.

How far away from the speaker are you hearing the hiss...?

If you can hear it up close, I think that is common.

If you are hearing it 9 feet away, you might have a problem..

good luck..

When you're listening from your favorite spot, at your preferred listening level, how loud is the hiss?

From my favorite spot the hiss is not audible.  I appreciate your comments.
