Problem with Electrocompaniet ECD-1 DAC
« on: 19 Sep 2011, 08:06 am »
I love the sound of the Electrocompaniet ECD-1 DAC, but it has an annoying bug, which is now more apparent since I use it with an Oppo BDP-93.

Occasionally, when the digital source (any source, any connection, optical or electric, any resolution) starts to output data, the ECD-1 has problems "locking in" (sorry, I don't know a better technical term) and the sound is muffled (like AM radio). This can be solved by switching back and forth between digital inputs of the ECD-1, by switching it off and on again, or by restarting playback on the digital source.

When I use a CD player or my PC as a source, this is not a practical problem, as it only happens once or twice a week (I listen 3-4 hours every day), at the beginning of an album.

But the Oppo BDP-93, which I now use as my main music server, does not support gapless playback with music files, and it's digital output seems to switch off and on between every track. This now multiplies the risk of having this "lock in" problem of the ECD-1. Once or twice per evening, I have this weird sound coming from the ECD-1, and need to skip back to the beginning of a track to fix it.

I have tried different inputs and cables, but this has no effect.

Does anyone know what causes this problem, and if it can be fixed?

Thanks
