Sept 24th listening party, lots to hear!
« on: 18 Sep 2011, 04:15 am »
Most of you know I'm a speaker builder ... if you don't know, my business is Vapor Audio - http://www.vaporsound.com

I'd love to have you over to hear the Cirrus and Breeze, as well as a couple new designs I call Aurora and Arcus.  They're all stand mount speakers, but the similarities end there.  It's a diverse bunch, and I would very much appreciate honest feedback from everybody.

I'll have 3 rooms setup, but my gear is a mess right now due to two amps blowing recently.  Hopefully I'll have my Ekco EV55SE back by then, and maybe a new amp as part of a Stereomojo.com review.  However if somebody has a Squeezebox they could bring, that would be really helpful.  And I don't mind doing gear swapping, so if you have something that you want to bring for people to hear, please do!

The only other thing I'd say to bring is some CD's, and whatever you want to drink.  We'll get takeout from the local BBQ place for lunch, so a few bucks for that as well.

I'd say let's plan to start listening between noon an 1pm, but if you want to throw some lead out in the backyard first, come over around 10:30 - 11am.  Even if you've never shot before but would like to try, come over early and I'd be happy to show you the ropes.

My address is:

5962 Town and Country Ln
House Springs, MO  63051

House is a white two story with pillars out front.  Parking will be limited, but my yard is nothing but rocks and weeds so don't worry about parking in my grass.  We'll go as late into the night as you want, and I'll even have a spare bedroom if somebody from out of town a bit wants to come and not have to drive home at night.

Thanks for hosting the get-together!  I'll see you Saturday.

I'ld love to bring my Concert Grands over to compare, with whatever speakers are in the basement, of course! But since my vehicle is just a Chevy Suburban with the fold down flat center seats, only one can fit inside.  However, I do have a roof rack!  Perhaps if I go to http://upickem.stltoday.com/engine/SplashDetails.aspx?contestid=17232&productid=3101506
I can be inspired to create a handy dandy little Concert Grand lifter to place it delicately on the roof rack.  Hmm, now what was the maximum load for that roof rack???  :o

It would probably be easier for me to bring something over to your place sometime Ken, that would be a fun comparison.

Gee ya think?  heh heh

Actually it would be a fun comparison, though at the moment, what with the crossovers held together with a dozen+ alligator clips and just laying on the floor, I think I need to finish that project first. However, test driving two different cars for handling characteristics with both using bald bias-ply tires is not a reasonable test. To do justice to your your fine speakers I really need to get a new CD player, my current one is going bonkers and becomes unlistenable after 5 minutes of playing and being a cheepie over 15 years old, it is not worth fixing. Another area of concern is my ARC SP4 pre-amp.  I had a friend bring over his preamp and the comparison was pathetic.  It made the SP4 sound as if my stylus was mistracking and actually a new cartridge would be in order, but that wasn't the problem, it was the SP4. I'm not sure if just a better phono stage would be enough, I suspect the entire pre-amp needs a new preamp.  Also, the bass problem in my room.  What with the walls being north to south 19'2" and east to west 17'5" I do have a bit of a bass problem.  The ceiling height is 8'1" at the N-S ends and 12'8" in the center which does help.  However, to get rid of the resonance, careful placement of two 8'x4' sheets of engineered wood with the long side vertical near the corners eliminates most of the problem.  Needless to say this was done while the wife out of town.  Something with a better WAF (wife approval factor) is needed!

I'll bring two 6 packs Saturday, that weighs about 94% less. :icon_lol:

I won't be able to make it. The boss just filled my next two weekends with a major project.  :?

I was at Bob's house today, which is in the same subdivision as Turbo FC3S' 9/24 listening party.

Getting to within a mile of the house is the easy part, they are less than 30 minutes south of the City down Tesson Ferry/MO-21S or 55-S.  The last few turns can be tricky though, and GPS won't help you. My advice is to turn left, hard left, once you turn off of M. (or is it MM?)  Once on Town & Country, stay left.

It seems like a nice area to shoot guns. Excellent driving roads too   :green:

Right there, it's "MM".
As you drive east towards highway 55, it's changes to "M" right at 21.

My house is easy to find, look for the front yard that just had the giant trench dug in it.

I've had quite a few guys send PM's and emails saying they're coming.  So there will be more than 1-2 here that it looks like from reading this thread ... I'd guess 7-8 people, and at least one shooter maybe two.

Bernie is bring over his SAS tube monoblocks and pre-amp which I'll have in the main room, and I'm excited to hear them!

We'll be listening from noon to probably around 8-9pm.  You're free to come over anytime during that stretch, for as long as you'd like.  And if anybody wants, cigars are on me  :)

Oh, and if possible bring a folding chair ... if you have one.  Please!  I was going to rent some, but my SUV crapped out and won't be back from the shop for the weekend.  So if I did rent some, I'd have no way to pick them up.

If you can and will bring a folding chair, could you please reply here or PM me and let me know?  Because if it turns out nobody has any to bring, I'll need to figure out a way to get some here.

I'd like to attend if the house isn't full yet.  I'm headed to the Cardinal game first & will stop by after 3pm.

Ryan, I sent you a PM.

Somebody take pictures for those of us that have to work. And remember, do NOT shoot my little Niteshade amp.  :nono:

Have fun!

If the crew needs an amp to use as target practice, Bob might have some dead plate amps lying around and he's only a block away.   :D

This is a shot in the dark, but if anyone heading to Ryan's (or the host) wants to get the best sound from the SET ns-15 amp of Blackmore's, you'll want to twist & tune the feedback knob to fit the speakers.

That little amp is somewhat new to Blackmore, but i've owned a similar amp for a while.  There is a critical sweet spot with that dial, only takes a minute or 2 to find it though.  If its out of sync, Ryan's speakers will be muffled & dull.  IME, the sweet spot has been with zero feedback with the knob twisted all the way to one side.

I will unfortunately not be able to attend.  Sometimes outside interventionists and other devious factions disrupt an otherwise pleasant day.

Guess I'll be the first to post this pic.  Needless to say shooting today got a little out of hand.

Thanks Ryan for hosting this get together.  Your speakers as always are outstanding.
