What HD's are you using with your BDP-1?
« on: 14 Sep 2011, 02:29 am »
What hard drives are you currently using with your BDP-1?  How many? How large? Happy with them?

On the same topic (hopefully this is not considered a hijack)...has anyone compared USB bus powered to ac-wallwart powered.  Does the USB bus add noise to the BDP-1?  And I'm assuming all these larger HD's are plugged into the rear USB inputs, not front?

I am using a pair of these drives from Oyen Digital:

http://oyendigital.com/hard-drives/store/TQM12H-72-2000-S.html

I haven't done any type of comparison between them and the less expensive Seagate or Western Digital external USB drives.

My drives are plugged into the rear USB ports on the BDP-1.

I am using 750gb Seagate GoFlex  and 500gb WD MyPassport. Never had a problem with either.

Werd can loudly comment on this... he used some wallwarted HDD and decided thumbdrives were the way to go.  I'm unsure if he ever tried a bus powered usb drive.

Several folks on this forum are excited to hear that James and crew are working on a multi-drive HDD enclosure with a legit power supply.   This should be a killer offering for folks with larger collections or folks that prefer to have SSDs over the mechanical HDDs.

Zybar,
BTW, those less expensive Seagate, Hitachi (also g-tech), WD HDD are the same drives found in the more expensive after market enclosures.  The link you pointed has a picture showing the "less expensive" seagate drive used and you still need a wallwart.   For $200, I would rather have two 1TB WD or Seagate bus-powerd drives to avoid the wallwart and let the BDP supply the power.

Jim,

The reason I went with the Oyen Digital drives is the enclosure and the chip set, not the physical disks.  Might be a waste of money...might not be.

When I get my gear back from Ted, I will try two tests to see if I can hear any difference:

1.  usb stick vs. the Oyen Digital external HD
2.  Oyen Digital external HD vs. a Seagate or WD external HD

I'll have to leave the self-powered HD vs. externally powered HD to somebody else...

Any further thoughts on this James? I converted some files from Flac to Wav but then got sidetracked for a few weeks comparing S/PDIF to AES/EBU connections from the BDP to BDA (after the TAS review). I did seem to find Wav offering a slightly better sound than Flac but really need to do more listening. Do you or anyone else have any further thoughts on this?

I use an OCZ Enyo 128GB SSD. I wanted to keep everything, from beginning to end, in solid state.

I am using the OCZ Enyo SSD also and I think it is perfect; however, it is pricey.  I was hoping that the price on them would come down but it is about where it was  10 months ago when I bought it.  I am needing more space now so I may get something else.

Can't even consider SSD until the size of the drives improves substantially (orders of magnitude).  I need 3-4TB of storage capacity given the size of my collection (7000+ albums).

Has anybody tested SSD vs. spinning disk for sound quality?

In this application, I don't see how the SSD's far superior performance will necessarily be a benefit.

What's unique about this chipset?

Ted,

correct...the larger hdd need the back connectors. and as far as i understand it: the upper usb input at the BDP-1's back and the two front inputs are 'shared' ones (means that they have the same power supply). the lower usb input has its own power supply. my experience is that it can handle therefore usb-powered hdd with up to 1tb storage without issues.

maybe the front inputs can handle tb hdd IF they have their OWN power supply (like 3.5" drives...)??? not sure about that and i haven't tried it yet...

Tony,
I just looked up your Enyo drive.  Wow, those certainly are pricey- relative to the non SSD options.

George,
Your question about sound quality and SSD vs spinning disk is a great one.  Hoping folks who own both kinds of drives might chime in with comments.

I am considering picking up a few silver Seagate 2.5 drives currently on sale for $49.99 at Best Buy.

Would these be appropriate for use with the BDP-1?  Didn't know if the 18" USB cable might be a problem.  Since I won't need the backup software, should I reformat the drive?   What file format?  I will most likely be ripping my audio files on my Windows XP machine, but my current FLAC hires files live on my MacBook Pro.  Will I be able to transfer these FLAC files from the Mac to the Seagate as well?

This is a good sale, but should I be considering something else instead?  Should I be considering a USB 3.0 drive instead?

This is what I have. Basically the same specs only its WD. I copied the ripped files from my laptop, connected it to the BDP-1, and that was it. No formating, just plug and play.
