Home Theater set up
« on: 13 Sep 2011, 09:27 pm »
Considering a magnepan/bryston home theater set up but not sure which set up will yield the best result in terms of most bang for the buck. I've read the 3.7 requires alot of juice to get er going so wondering whether its best to just go with the 1.7 and say a 9B or 1.7 and power them with a 6B. The goal is more towards HT. What are your recommendations? Anyone with a superior understanding of audio please chime in. :)

System # 1

Magnepan MG 1.7 w/ matching MGCC3/5 ctr sp, MC1 surrounds
Bryston 9BSST2 5ch

System #2
Magnepan MG 1.7 w/ matching MGCC3/5 ctr sp, MC1 surrounds
Bryston 6BSST2 L/R/C channels
Bryston 9BSST 4ch for MC1 surrounds (7.1)

System #3
Magnepan MG 3.7 w/ matching MGCC3/5 ctr sp, MC1 surrounds
Bryston 9BSST2 5ch

I'm no expert but I would opt. for option #2. Being that it's a 4 ohm speaker with 87 db efficiency.

Like I use a 3B SST2 with a 4 ohm load on the mains and the amp is sufficient for my power needs. The 9B at 200 watts could be straining with Magnepans. A speaker which I haven't heard and unfamiliar. A 9B for smaller surrounds should be sufficient.

What are you using for a processor? :smoke:

Undecided on a processor. Would love an SP3...hehehe, and keep it an all Bryston affair. Any recommendations?

What is your SSP budget? Aside from the new Bryston another Canadian company is Anthem with the Statement D2v and AVM 50v models. Then there is the Classe SSP-800 which always gets great feeback. The Anthem AVM 50v is the cheapest of these 4 then of course there is the step up units that cost uber bucks like the Theta Casablanca III HD, Meridian 861 and Mark Levinson No. 502. If you can wait until next year there is the upcoming Lexicon MP-20. If you read up on that unit you will see it has some amazing features. I'm a Lexicon owner so I'm biased :) I have the MC-12Bv5EQ

All nice gear...anyone heard of Emotiva products? Are their products really comparable to high end audio? Why is it their stuff cost so much less? Anyone have any thoughts on this?

For a simple 5.1 setup you can consider Oppo Digital BDP-93 (or 95) using the analog outputs to the Parasound P7 with your Brystons amps.      Also even a used SP1.7 or SP2 is still a killer setup, but if you don't want the Parasound and you can also look for a used Audio research MP1 or the McIntosh C45.

I am currently using a Oppo-93 and a SP1.7 in a 5.1 channel HT setup with a 9B SST2 for the CC and surrounds and a 4B SST2 for the LR channels.  Overall, a very nice setup.  Once the SP3 is released I would expect many SP1.7 units to be for sale used.  Moreover, if you purchase a SP1.7 used you can get it upgraded to the SP2 by Bryston.  Good luck.

Cheers,

John

I owned Emotiva XPA-1 monoblocks, an XPA-5 (5 channel amps) and their ERC-1 CD player. I first purchased the XPA-5 and it sounded pretty good so I ordered the other two. The first time I watched a movie with the THX intro to Stars Wars the mono blocks shut down. I should note that my preamp's x-over was set to 60hz. I reset the amps by disconnecting the power and they turned them back on. I then changed the crossover to 80 hz and did not have the same problem again.

I also began hearing a pinging sound from the mono's which bothered me when listening to the amps at a low volume. The one amp did this frequently so I contacted Emotiva. I sent the amp in and they stated that this was the normal expansion and contraction of the amps heat sinks. I asked if they would send me a new one as I didn't have this problem with the XPA-5 and my other XPA-1 only did this occasionally and I felt I could live with it. They sent me a new one which was better but still "pinged" on occasion like my other XPA-1.

Not long after this my ERC-1 CD player would not eject a CD. I found if I layed the cd player on its side it would eject. I figured since it was only $399 it was not worth returning. I can't use the cd player anymore.

A while later my XPA-1's blew fuses. I called Emotiva and they told me how to replace them and they worked fine for a while then it happened again,,,, and then again. After two years I finally got rid of them.

I have in the past owned gear from Sony, Citation, Acurus, Classe, Anthem, Lexicon, Pass Labs and others and have rarely had problems with the exception of the Sony stuff from 1989. I just can't understand why the Emotiva XPA-5 worked so well. I'm not sure if many others had problems, maybe it was just me. I should note that for the price they did sound very good. The only other thing that bothered me was a whistling sound from the tweeters when I turned off the XPA-1's...this also happened with my Acurus amps years ago when I owned Infinity RS 8 Kappa's.

Wow...thanks for the detailed Emotiva review. Definately very useful. Still would prefer Bryston gear, especially with their extensive warranty/reputation. Looking on Audiogon as they have great used gear there. Would really love a Magnepan/Bryston set up and thought what better way that to talk to people that currently employ such a set up. I'm very interested in the MG 1.7s...heard as et once and they sounded very nice. Just not sure what the difference is sound between the MG1.7 and 3.7 would be. Can anyone offer their views? I tend to focus more towards a home theater set up.
