Drove by a yard sale on the way to church this morning and saw this:



Went back this afternoon and it was still there so after a little haggling with owner over price, I bought it along with a few 78s--Gershwin, Stravinsky (Firebird Suite). Not my normal listening pleasure but I needed some 78s to play. Everything works and the unit is in great shape. It is a Victor Orthophonic Victrola model VV 4-3 and the serial number tells me it was made in 1927.

Up till Wednesday, I had a few boxes of 78's. Today they are sitting on a very large pile of garbage along with ALL my vinyl I would have just given them to you.

Most I see over here have been badly treated, with copious quantities of paint applied in the past.
Yours looks very original and unmolested

It is the original finish. I'm very fortunate to have stumbled on to it. I downloaded a copy of the operating manual and I have to buy some steel needles because the instructions say to change the needle after every play. Good thing they are available and relatively inexpensive.

That's a beautiful old record player.

I was going to ask if you need a horn to hook up to it. I just googled it and see that it has an internal horn. Just open the cabinet doors and you're good to go.

Ed, the manuel says a 60 deg angle on the needle, not perpendicular.

   hahahaha....thats great, they were really into it starting back then!!  I should probably find out what azimuth is I guess (I have a pretty good idea)
