I'm a little jealous of Cheeseboys new tube pre from Gary  :green: I've been wanting to play with one of those for quite some time. no balanced output though  :(

As for subs. I never owned the LS6 but with my LS9's, my sub added another 1/2 octave of bass. The "room shudder effect" you get from a good sub at 15-25hz makes the soundstage seem more realstic. Once you've heard it you'll want it. :)

I would agree that  at 30-100 hz the LS has enough power to shake drywall off the studs of your house. quite fun indeed :thumb:

I was all ready to buy a used Dodd battery pre from an AC person before I talked to Gary.  Heard it love it and was ready to buy it.  You know it you love it and so do I.  The Dodd battery pre amp I bought is a new design from Gary.  He stated that his listening group thinks it is better than the original.  AHHH and the price is right.  I was talking to him to see if he had some B stock amps around that could be purchased when he brought up the new battery pre design.  He offered to sell me the RMAF sample he was taking to the show to introduce there.  He made me an offer I couldn't refuse.  The balls on that guy.

I did alot of consulting with the industry wags here on AC and one of them, Bill at Response Audio had extensive experience building upgraded crossovers for the LS series.  When I point blank asked him to recommend a good value musical amp for the LS6's he gave me the Digital Amp Company DAC-4800.  He had used them alot and said they were a perfect match with that speaker and a tubed pre amp.  Bill has more audio knowledge in his baby toe than I will ever have in my lifetime.  His new line of preamps is smokin hot and fully balanced.  I just don't have that kind of dough right now.  I was locked on the New Hybrid Amp from Van Alstine.  or a used hybrid like yours.    I saw the posting for the used Cherry Jr that was given to the reveiwer at Affordable Audio.

Another Deal of the Decade.

I am one happy camper right now.

Congratulation on your purchase of Dodd equipment and the Cherry Jr.  You will enjoy the combination.

What sub are you using?  I might wanna bounce the house.  I was looking at one of Craigsubs 18 inchers. or a servo sub from GR.
It would be nice to have a balanced pre.

Cheeseboy - Congrats on getting it all lined up and ordered! I'm sure you will be happy!

FWIW, with regard to SW with the LS. I go back and forth. Sometimes, I go straight 2.0 and it's good enough 90%+ of the time.

....but every now and then - JL Fathom f113 -  :green:

It DOES make a difference.

I've heard many great things about the LS6 bass response, but I can't imagine not using my dual MFW-15's.  Once you get used to that degree of low freq output, it's pretty noticeable when it's not there.

I'm looking forward to the comparison though!

Freerider,

There is a guy up here in the valley, Soundofrockets that has the LS 9 with two MFW15s.  He just ordered an LS Center from Rueben.  On home theater his rig is unstopable.

The best I have ever heard.

It will blow your mind!

WOW a Fathom 113,  Now I have to visit.  When do you get your new preamp?

Everything is supposed to get wrapped up after the show ends on Sunday, then shipped out Monday. Not quite sure on the shipping method, so I'll guess sometime the following week (24-28)

Yeah, I like my Fathom by itself for music, I add my Velodyne F1500r for HT.

Someday, I'll combine everything, and get my MFW-15 in there as well.  :bounce: (still want to turn that into a Turbo, but can't get a good answer on how long it would take)

I was looking at another thread of his, because I'm considering an UMC-1, since they are on sale (to replace my Harmon Kardon).  I was going to ask him how he liked his.

With HT, there's no such thing as too much bass  :green:

(... well not entirely true)

Freerider, you got the No Rez okay? Sorry about the tracking number, I got unbelievably slaughtered at work. I worked over 25 hours straight one day, and was up like a zombie for the next 16 hours until my brain finally gave in.

I had several days working 16+ hours in a row, and I lost track of time and dates. I realized it was the day of delivery before I caught my bearings, and figured you would just get the No Rez that day anyhow.

I have dual MFW-15s.

They sound absolutely terrible in comparison to the LSs. The quality of bass you get from the LSs, might not compare in overall SPL, but the quality is several levels above.

Even for HT I can't seem to stand the MFWs much anymore. The bass is just too bloated and poorly articulated in comparison to the LSs.

For music I can almost bet you won't want to use the MFWs with the LSs, it just ruins the definition and low range articulation of the LSs.

For movies, for sheer impact, you might think differently.

Good luck with everything man.  :thumb:

Thanks kingdeezie!  I got the NoRez no problem, been cutting it since last week!

I've been on a slow audiophile journey over the last few years, slowly replacing one part of the system for an upgrade every so often.  The MFWs were light years beyond what they replaced, so I am not surprised to hear the LS6s will be yet another step up in quality. I suppose someday, I'll replace the MFWs with a servo-controlled DIY, to get more articulate bass to match the LS6s.

At one point a couple years ago, I was going to get a Rythmik Audio kit, but the cheap MFWs proved too much of a temptation.  That was when I got involved with the AV321 fiasco.

LS-6's with dual MFW-15's here too. I've tried with and without, and the subs just make everything sound better to me, even music. It's not just about output, it's also about being able to place subwoofers in different and best locations to optimize and even out the low frequency response. Typical main speaker placement is usually the worst place for frequencies below 80 hz. I'm also a BIG fan of dual subs, as two placed carefully can really even out the response in a room vs. a single sub-woofer.

But each to his own, and maybe I will try the LS-6's without the subs again someday just for fun. I can run the auto EQ (ARC) in my Anthem D2 processor and have a movie setting and music setting, so I could EQ the LS-6's alone in stereo for music and give that another try. I have done that before and still liked it better with subs, but might be a fun project for a cold winter day.

I've been eyeing the LS Center too, though my X-Voce is alright, I can tell it is not in the same league as my LS-6's. Might try one of my N3S surrounds I built as a center just to see how it sounds up front. They are a great match on the sides. But the LS Center would make a fun winter project....

The thing I love about this hobby is the same thing I hate about it.  I thought I could sit back and be content with my new system.

My new punch list includes No REz and a Crossover upgrade for the LS speakers, Investigate a musical subwoofer to complement the LS6's.  Bass traps will be intregral to the sytem if the subs are employed.

Crap, I forgot to buy new cables.

Soundofrockets, Sunil, is a great guy and very honest in his evaluations.  I was very impressed with the sound quality of his system.  He would be able to articulate the good and bad associated with the UMC-1.

I'm in agreement with KD as I don't like using subs with my LS9's. My subs are 2 Danley DTS 10's. I have 3 LS9's accross the front luckily, but would still like to see how a LSC matches.
