Also, Is there a way to tell visually without opening the cabinet if it's a classic or encore series?

The only difference (outwardly) is the tweeter.

Didn't the encores all have metal grills or am I mistaken?

And to answer the first question ...encore has a much higher quality tweeter and the crossover parts were upgraded slightly.

There were also grill differences, not sure if this 100% correct, but from memory:

X-LS Classic China  -  Snowman Cloth Grill (May have switched to Rectangle while production was still in China)
X-LS Classic Columbia -  Rectangular Cloth Grill
X-LS Encore Columbia  -  Metal Grill  (Cloth may have been an option)

Thanks guys for all of the great information.
I actually have a pair of these still in the box and was wondering what the heck do I own. 
They've been sitting for over 2 years in the original boxes (B-Stock Moho) and I finally decided that I'm going to sell them since I can't find a home for them.

And this morning, I finally found the receipt, which said they were indeed Encore.
