I found it an interesting read, as it touches on pieces I have read elsewhere, but rarely collected this way, and even less frequently explained both in science, and related to the listening experience.

I read through your article. I am very impressed and think it is an example to what ohters also could achieve with som good measurent tools and imagination. Dealing with a real world room it is quite constructive, inspiring and for many very near their reality.

May be be I missed something but reference to your measurerments, program and resolution of charts I never grasped. And what measurement gear was used.

It is of course a bit of good knews for miniDSP, and not unfair in any way. Also not unfair to the new companionship with REW. How about testing the XTZ mic and program: http://www.xtz.se/uk/products/mearurement-system/room-analyzer . Which would be readily avalaable anywhere.

Great article, as usual!  Did you try any other slopes besides LR?  I've found that I like the sound of other filters better than LR.  I stuck with LR filters for a long time because I thought they should sound better than the others, but I've found through experience that my initial thoughts were mistaken. 

Does the mini-DSP come with REW now?  If so I'd have to seriously consider getting one to replace my DCX2496.

The miniDSP has piqued my interest for sure. The DCX and it's PS remote capabilities piss me off on a regular basis. Although having all of the filters is a pretty cool trick.

The smaller miniDSP boards have a mode where you can load auto-generated filters from REW. The 2x8 boards run at 96 k so it doesn't work, I think I may have seen that the windows-only beta now supports 96k. I don't use auto-filters anyway.

Tyson, not tried other slopes, at this point I'm still focused on the baffle shapes and room interaction. I have another prototype to try yet before settling on a final configuration.

Erling, thanks, appreciate it. I used REW and Fuzz Measure Pro, no smoothing. In retrospect I could have used a longer sweep time in REW for the waterfalls etc, I'll try it next time.

John, great article.  It shows a lot of thought and the experimentation necessary to get good results in a less than ideal room.

Don't worry too much about the 80Hz suckout.  If you have to lose some enrgy in the LF this is the place to do so.  This is the dreaded "mud area" that recording engineers avoid like the plague.

John - too much energy there and everything begins to sound too thick: articulation suffers.  Also, when it comes to the non-linearity of our ear/perception complex a 10dB hole in response has an aural equilvalency of a 3dB bump in response.  I would rather trade a small energy deficit for a high Q rise.
