Bang & Olufsen Beogram RX help please...
« on: 1 Sep 2011, 10:54 pm »
Someone gave me an RX turntable in good cosmetic condition. Can someone please help me:

1. A service manual? (It's not on VE)

2. The left channel is extremely weak, I can hear a "flash" of normal volume just before the needle hits the groove and just as it is raised from the groove. I think the mute mechanism might be at fault.

3. The dustcover is missing the "axles," any idea of a good McGuyver fix?

Thanks,

Paul

If all you need are steel pins you could use stainless steel welding rod. It comes in a variety of diameters one of which may be the correct size. Short metal rods are also available in some hardware stores in a number of sizes as well.

Actually, I think you really have to buy new, they can only rebuild select MMC models, not the MMC-3 I have. I also found aminaaudio . com; they rebuild for a flat fee of 100. I'm leaning towards a middle line SoundSmith; if I cannot revive the table I can always buy the 50 dollar mount and use it as a conventional pickup.

Having plugged the cartridge in rotated 90 degrees (what a weird experience!) and having the sound move to the other channel rules out a problem with the muting switch or the wiring...I think the momentary blip of higher level sound as the needle hits the groove may be a failing suspension/internal wiring.

Ordered the entry level B&O replacement from SoundSmith. The guy on the phone assured me it will happen in two weeks. Orders taking as long as a year have been reported! Still no good advice on the dustcover. The RX-2 manual is online but differs slightly from the RX, enough to make it hard to figure out.

Anybody got a pic under the dustcover lip?
