We almost had a real disaster recently. Our 2 golden retriever “puppies" (6 month old female and a 10 month old male) broke into a rather spontaneous wrestling match and bumped one of our speakers while we were watching TV. The HT2 TL wobbled back and forth a few times, but thankfully didn’t fall - it probably would have crashed into the TV since it was bumped in that direction.
Seeing that speaker teeter back and forth was a scary thing to experience – it was similar to watching a car crash where it appeared to be in slow motion. I knew I couldn’t get to it to stop it from falling if it did. That was
way too close and it really scared the heck out of us.
So in an effort to prevent that from happening again in the future we decided to purchase a set of outriggers (round end with 1.50" cones) from Paul at soundocity.com. The HT2 TL's need 3/8-16 hardware, which isn't the standard size that normally ships with the outriggers. I emailed Paul about the thread size and he replaced the standard 1/4-20 hardware with the correct size hardware for the HT2 TL's in the order.
I just received the outriggers and installed them in no time. Now the speakers are almost impossible to knock over and as an added bonus the tweeters are now right at my ear height - they sit lower than they did with the standard HT2 TL spikes due to the shorter 1.50" cones. One nice thing that I didn't consider when we ordered the outriggers is that you can easily level the speaker if your floor isn't level (ours isn't) just by turning the nobs.
They don't look quite as nice as Jim's spikes, but we feel that the peace of mind from knowing that it is a
lot harder to topple the speakers is a decent trade off for the looks.
