Puppy proofing HT2-TL's!
« on: 31 Aug 2011, 06:34 pm »
We almost had a real disaster recently. Our 2 golden retriever “puppies" (6 month old female and a 10 month old male) broke into a rather spontaneous wrestling match and bumped one of our speakers while we were watching TV. The HT2 TL wobbled back and forth a few times, but thankfully didn’t fall - it probably would have crashed into the TV since it was bumped in that direction.

Seeing that speaker teeter back and forth was a scary thing to experience – it was similar to watching a car crash where it appeared to be in slow motion. I knew I couldn’t get to it to stop it from falling if it did. That was way too close and it really scared the heck out of us.

So in an effort to prevent that from happening again in the future we decided to purchase a set of outriggers (round end with 1.50" cones) from Paul at soundocity.com. The HT2 TL's need 3/8-16 hardware, which isn't the standard size that normally ships with the outriggers. I emailed Paul about the thread size and he replaced the standard 1/4-20 hardware with the correct size hardware for the HT2 TL's in the order.

I just received the outriggers and installed them in no time. Now the speakers are almost impossible to knock over and as an added bonus the tweeters are now right at my ear height - they sit lower than they did with the standard HT2 TL spikes due to the shorter 1.50" cones. One nice thing that I didn't consider when we ordered the outriggers is that you can easily level the speaker if your floor isn't level (ours isn't) just by turning the nobs.

They don't look quite as nice as Jim's spikes, but we feel that the peace of mind from knowing that it is a lot harder to topple the speakers is a decent trade off for the looks.

Speaking as a retriever owner, I think you would get a lot more mileage out of those things if you put them on the dog.  Do you think speakers are the only object that's going to get broken?

They look good from the close up picture, but I'd like to see a pic from the listening position if you are willing. :)

I too have had my HT2-TL speaker teeter back and forth in a similar fashion.  To say it was scary is an understatement!  I was chasing my son around the house just horsing around, and he ran right into the side of one of my speakers.  It was like slow motion watching it teeter back and forth, but I still couldn't have caught it had it fallen.  I should consider getting outriggers as well.

Had a pair of Outriggers on my Adagios.  Easy to install and definitely do a nice job stabilizing the speakers.

 Actually we have found that having two retrievers generally cuts down on the total damage since they beat the heck out of each other and are almost too tired to chew up things like digital cameras, etc. ; )

BTW, how is Big Ben doing these days?

The Benster is doing what he usually does--complaining about my viola playing.   He's not as dumb as I thought.

This is taken with a very wide angle lens standing behind the listening position:

Is it just the way it looks (camera angle, sub in place, etc.) or is the left speaker closer to the left wall than the right speaker is to the right wall?

The camera is really distorting things, but the front and left wall have a wood covered section (from the thin blue trim downward) that juts out 7" - covering the concrete foundation. You can see the gap at the top left side of the left GIK tri-trap. The front windows are centered to the walls.

The foundation does make it tricky to make things look centered, but there isn't much I can do about it. On the bright side the shelf comes in handy.

I doubt that he has much to complain about your ability - it might be your choice of music ; )
