BIG listening party coming, pick a date?
« on: 31 Aug 2011, 02:22 pm »
Hey guys, I've been making mounds of sawdust over here ... measuring all sorts of new drivers, and in the process have come up with a few new interesting designs that I'd like everybody to give me their thoughts on.  So before I officially announce it, can you let me know which of the weekends in Sept will work better for you - either Sept 17th or 24th?  And if you'd like to come, but have no preference please just say so.

I'm out in House Springs by the way, right up the street from Bob.

I'll be setting up 3 separate rooms.  I should have enough gear, but 2 amps bit the dust on me this week (bad week) so I might have to ask if somebody could bring one.  I do have a 93db sensitive monitor speaker (capable of 118db btw), and would love to try a SET in the 8-15wpc range on it, if somebody had one they could bring?

I've got marching band competitions on both days so I can't come.  I do have a little NS-15 from Niteshade.  It uses 6L6 tubes in SET mode and produces 15 watts if that sounds like something that would interest you.  Let me know and we can figure out how to get it down your way.

If you ever have a weekday free before then you could come down and hear what I'm working on ... or I'd be happy to meet you somewhere.  That NS-15 sounds like it would be perfect.

The speaker that will be for by the way is a 2-way with the Beyma TPL-150/H waveguide loaded air motion transformer and an Acoustic Elegance TD10M 10" woof, 92-93db sensitive.  And it's a monitor, albeit a near 100lb monitor  :D

Either date is works for me but I'm 50/50 as I'm still on a mission to finish the basement rebuild. I'm really close to getting it done but I still have a bunch of little finishing touches that I have to take care of.

If I don't happen to make it, I'll see you out at RMAF.  :thumb:

17th is a possibility for me, 24th we're at The Lake.

I can bring some vintage SS power if you're interested.  :D

What's one day Scott  :)  I have a lot to do for finishing up my basement as well ...

Vintage SS power?  You could bring it along, I'm sure we could find a time/place to plug it in and do a comparo.

Something else I'm working on ... just found the 'magic' in the crossover today.  Can you say less than .1% THD from 150hz to 20K!

Looks like a bold & brawny little iron.  :D

Can't wait to hear them.   The 17th or 24th may both work for me.

Hey Ryan,

Have you considered hitting the baffle edges with a roundover? It appears that you went to a lot of trouble controlling standing waves and the waveguide and putting a roundover.  That should improve the imaging a bit...

Great, look forward to seeing you ... these suckers are a 'bookshelf' with balls.  8" woofer in about 1.2 cu/ft, walls made of 10 layers of hardboard laminated with marine epoxy over jigs to pre-tension them.  I have a hunk of the wall that I think will stop any handgun round, and intend to find out  :D

Diffraction is from transverse waves moving across the baffle face and scattering when it hits the terminus or edge.  With a waveguide of this size you don't get those transverse waves and thus edge diffraction isn't a concern.  Measurements confirm this as well.  So a roundover would have no effect on performance in this case.  Even in typical designs, a standard 1/2" or 3/4" roundover does very little to control edge diffraciton.  You need to get up to the 2" roundover range to eliminate it, or 3" as I've designed into my Cirrus.

Ryan, I can't say for sure but I will try and make it. The 24th is better for me. I might be enticed by a nice cigar and dram of Scotch . Looking forward to hearing the latest system

1/4 wavelength principle would still apply. ( I have a 2" roundover on mine. )
Looks like an interesting design. I wish I could hear them.

BTW I still have those ob2x you sold me. Too bad they don't see much use though.

Hope you can make it!  You know my humidors are always open for you, and I'll line up some scotch for the get-together.

It does, but the point is the cabinet edge is taken out of play by the controlled directivity nature of waveguides.  While this waveguide profile wasn't designed with controlled directivity in mind, it does still have that effect.

Is the veneer and finish on those OB2X's still looking good?

I've wanted to meet you all for a while now; reference from electricbear.  Might I be included?
