We recently dumped our old AT&T DSL service in favor of a private microwave link from a local ISP called Monkey Brains that has largely flown under the radar, although they have been around since the dial-up days.
The last couple years, they have been building a private microwave network, starting in SOMA and the Mission, and expanding out from there. They got to our Castro neighborhood in the last few months.
For the same price as the rotten "3 mb" AT&T DSL (which NEVER on it's best day ever got 3 mb downloads, and would only do about 640K uploads), we now have a symmetric link that averages between 15-25 mb, each way! $35 a month -- how can you beat it?
It was running a little slow tonight...but I'm not complaining!

Something the city government hasn't been able to do despite several years of trying.
Good on them, I say!
