What is my best bet, to upgrade Power supply on SB3 or to upgrade to a Touch? And why?

Thanks,

Mark

Do you have hi-rez computer music files (24/96)??

I guess it depends on what you care to spend. The better way would be to upgrade to the Touch AND get a linear power supply.

Of all the SB units, the Touch IS the best sounding on digital output and on analog.

Changing the switching power supply to a linear usually results in a lower noise floor. This is evident in a wider and deeper soundstage, deeper and tighter bass and cleaner and less harsh highs.

The Touch will also let you play 24/96 files natively. While some may not feel they can hear a difference, it is very plain to me.

A linear power supply will help you enjoy your SB3 now. It can also be used with the Touch, if you decide to move in that direction. The Touch can expand your enjoyment of all your music, but you will not get the full amount of benefit from it, without using a linear PS, IMO.

I am still not clear what your answer is Wayne. If I was going to spend $300 which would give me more quality music? The Power supply on an existing PS3 or upgrading to a Touch. All responses welcome.

Thanks,

Are you using a DAC with your SB3?

Yes, I am. As the audio out is unbearable. It is very fatiguing.

Thanks,

Then I will paraphrase Wayne's post:

I linear power supply will help your SB3 sound better.  The good news about getting a linear PS for your SB3 is that you can also use it with the Touch should you go that direction in the future.

The Touch sounds better than any of the other SB products, so upgrading to the Touch may be the best choice overall.  But the Touch also hugely benefits from a linear PS.  So really, you should consider both.

My recommendation is to find a good deal on a Touch.  I just bought mine recently for $240.00 shipped (upgraded from a Duet).  I purchased a Jerome linear PS for a total of $27.00 with the adapter kit for the power cable.  Not a bad investment, and the sound is markedly better than my Duet with a linear PS.

If I want more from my Jerome linear PS, I will send it to Wayne for modding.  For the time being, I'm quite satisfied using the analog outs of the Touch.  I'm between DAC's right now waiting for the new Eastern Electric MiniMax Plus to ship.  I'll consider Wayne's mods on the Jerome PS after I get my new DAC and see what I think of the sound.

Thanks a bunch for your reply. I think that is the route I will go.

Thanks again,
