Thom from Flips can order Magnepans for you. Here is his website http://www.flipsaudiovideo.com/
Chris H.

Thanks for the link. Do he actually have a pair to listen to?

Guess that saves me a call to Wendell.  But Flip's isn't listed on the Magnepan site as a dealer.  If I were them, I would make that happen.  No one knew Flip's had them.

No one knew Flip's is a Magnapan dealer?

I would change that statement to "you didn't know..."

Fair enough, I didn't know.  Still, I wonder why Wendell wouldn't just tell me who the dealer was?  One of the earlier posts stated that Flip's was a dealer of theirs back in the day.  Wendell's  statement was that they "just" signed their new dealer in St. Louis.   And it's clear from the posts above this was not common knowledge.  A Google search of Magnepan St. Louis returns no place to purchase locally at least on the first 5 pages before I tired of the search as most consumers would.  My point is that if someone is a dealer they should have the support of the manufacturer.  This was in no way a indictment of Flip's, more so of Magnepan.

Am I wrong here?

I didn't even know Flip's was still in business since they closed their storefront on Woodsmill several years ago.  Shame on them for not letting the local community know.

I'm not sure if Thom (Flips) is still doing business. Last I talked to Thom, it was probably two or three years ago. He was living out in New Haven if I remember correctly. I just checked his old website and it hasn't been updated since 2001.

This isn't saying that Thom is out of business or doesn't still have access to Maggies, just that he has dropped off the radar. Not sure how to get a hold of him any more. I know in the years since he shut the storefront, he didn't have any new demo gear. He would just order gear for people that knew what they wanted.

I gotta wonder a little about a company (Magnepan) that spends this little effort to advertise and provide access to its products in a market as large as St. Louis. A person ought to be able to get answers to just about every question we've raised here in a two-minute phone conversation. Who's the dealer? Where can I hear a pair? Or am I missing something?

You're missing a pair of 3.7s!   :green:

From my interactions with Wendall Diller when he was working for Audio Research in the 1970's while I was working for Audio Systems & Design (three stores, NE & MN), all I can say is that I am not surprised in the least.

Why the hate?

Hate?  No, not hate, simply a different attitude than typical.  Wendell Diller worked for years at Audio Research, this was when Maganapan and Audio Research were all but joined at the hip.  If you remember, the Magneplaner line of Magnapan speakers were sold exclusively through Audio Research dealers, therefore if you wanted to sell the entire range of Magnapan products you had to be both an Audio Research dealer and a Magnapan dealer.  I'm sure that Winey became very familiar with Wendell's business style during that period before hiring Wendell and the fact that Wendell has worked for Magnapan for over three decades indicates that Winey and Wendell see eye to eye.

A typical sales manager is typically a rah rah sis boom bah type that is always pushing the envelope in a quest for more dealers and more sales, profit be damned.   This brings on board marginal dealers and marginal sales which typically have a higher expense to sales ratio than established stable, though less exciting, dealers.  The concept of of growth through increase in market share has left a lot of audio manufactures in the bankruptcy ditch, whereas a manufacturing entity that aims to lower debt and and more profitable sales is never going to be a darling of either Wall Street or the mass media, but harkens back to the days when the US was on the gold standard (ending with Nixon).  The go slow and be cautious approach is an anathema to a fiat monetary inflation based society that favors the rich over the middle class and poor.

You're right, Bob.  I guess Magnepan's strategy is to play "hard to get."  It appears to be working.

Anyone who is in a frenzy about getting a set of Magnepans would end up ahead of the game by contacting Kent, if he still has his set for sale.

Hi,

I would like to sell my 1.6s if anyone is interested.  They were purchased new in November 2008 from Glen Poor.  Call me at 636-399-8053 if you would like to hear them.  I am asking $1100.  They are black and cherry.  Thanks, Kent Johnson

Flip's original store on Big Bend is shuttered.  I think they're gone for good.

Do you mean HiFi Fo Fum ?
The owner of Fum died at new year. His children had no desire to run the business and weren't particularly fond of him. The bank assumed all assets.
