Lizst Piano Concertos #1 and #2 - Bolet

Despite little famiiarity with this composer and period, I do find this to be very good.

I do find it odd for a concerto to have five movements.

I think I picked this up at a local market for a couple of of dollars.

You might have either misread or not quite understood the movements. No.1 has the usual three movements, the second has four, the last actually closer to a coda rather than an actual movement. Once in a while they will fill out the disc with another work or two.

Um... OK, well, #1 has four movements, movement 3 is split into two tracks on this disc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piano_Concerto_No._1_(Liszt)

#2 has six movements not five. Or, "This concerto is one single, long movement, divided into six sections that are connected by transformations of several themes" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piano_Concerto_No._2_(Liszt)

So I was wrong in both case, but it's not 3 and 4 either. Are we talking about the same pieces?

I'll have another listen tonight :)

Bolet is quite good in Liszt - similar to Arrau - not as flashy as some, but greater depth of interpretation.

Hello everyone, I've just joined and this is my second post.

Yes, Bolet is na great Liszt player but can I stringly suggest that anyone interested in either the two PCs or the B minor sonata hear Sviatoslav Richter.

Holden,

I agree, I have that very CD on LP and it is sensational.

If you like this music make sure you pick up the Mendelssohn Piano Concerti. I have played them blind for friends and they always say Liszt or some other Romantic era composer. The first one really kicks butt.

Another interesting Richter is a mono version of Pictures at an Exhibition. It is live and some guy coughs a few times, but the piano playing is incredible.

Holden,
Gotta agree - pretty much any recording with Richer is worth checking out!

Seconded, and I'd throw in Byron Janis's recording, with the same conductor.

(Nice to see another familiar name on this forum.)
