Platform for amp
« on: 22 Aug 2011, 02:49 pm »
Hi all, in order to reduce the length of my speaker cables, I would have to place the power amp on the floor in between the speakers. Would it be necessary to place the power amp on a platform? Would a thick block of chopping board or granite do? How about some footers perhaps? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. I am using bryston 14b

If going on a carpeted surface they absolutely need to be raised for cooling purposes, but otherwise they could be placed directly on hard surface floors.

While you will get differing opinions on improved sound quality (or not) using a platform, a practical consideration is raising them off the floor will also reduce the amount of dirt, dust, pet hair, etc. (or even toe kicks) that they might have to contend with.

racksandstands.com has a selection of amp stands.  I opted to make my own.  On Audiogon, Dawn's Depot sells solid maple platforms.  I put that on top of a platform with Maple Shade big brass cones and some industrial isolation pads with cork surround by maple.  Looks nice

I have my 4B-SST2 between the speakers on a concrete patio block.
The patio block is on some old tiptoes. then the amp on rubber bottle stoppers on top of the patio slab.
Cheap, looks fine.

Here's a couple of pics of home made amp stands.  The first is when I have the 14BSST and I built a platform with the Maple Shape heavy brass spikes.  The second is with my current amp where I re-used the Maple Shade spikes and framed what they were screwed into with maple 1x3s and then had isolation pads on top of that and the 16x19 inch maple block on top of that.  Neither tooks tons of time.

I'm using http://www.foundationaudio.ca/html/rack.htm this for my 14B, the basic MRS-B Base Rack.

Not cheap (but cheaper than most so called 'high-end base') , and to be honest i can't really comment on any 'sound improvements'. But i like the high gloss piano finish (although a dust magnet) , and those stainless steel pillars r beautifuly made. One very stable base and that's all i can say. :green:

Not long ago, JA, I wanted to get something to put my 7BSSTs on. I looked at the various platforms that put the amps a few inches above the ground. I'm just too old the be bending over to connect or move the amps. I called Billy Bags in California (http://www.billybags.com/index.html). Based on what I wanted, they made a modifications to one of their standard models, which meant that they were custom built for me. The tables came with spikes that work just fine on my carpet. And the price was, I felt, very reasonable.
