Oppo DVD player not displaying 1080i
« on: 20 Aug 2011, 05:47 pm »
My Oppo DV-98OH will not display 1080i.  It will only play in 480 format.  The player was working fine two days ago.  All setting on my HDTV, AVR are correct.  When I switch to 1080i format on the Oppo I get a blank screen.  All connections are via HDMI cables.  Thanks for any help.

I'll look at my DV980H settings in the secondary basement system when I'm home later or tomorrow.  I have a 720p projector but I am input (from memory 1080 as the projector accepts it.  I have to go down there anyway to put a network switch I got so I'll have an extra input (just have not gotten to it yet).  I also use the DV980H as a region free player too as you just need to put a digital code (on the remote on the appropriate menu item and it is easily changed back).  Did the power go out between a couple of days ago and now?  Just curious.  I have DV980H for a long time in the secondary bedroom system (which gets used a few times a year for movies) and I didn't not want to get rid of it so I put it in the secondary basement system where I also use it with an HDMI audio de-embedder with an outboard DAC and convert SACD to PCM in the player.

Took a quick look and didn't see anything that stood out.  Have you tried changing HDMI cables?

If you want to make the player region free (assuming it is currently not that way), this is the procedure:

As to the process of converting the Oppo to become a region free DVD player, its very easy and can be done in less than a minute. Then should you encounter DVDs with RCE, you use the same procedure to set the player back as a Region 1 DVD player.

http://www.dvdtalk.com/rce.html

"Q: What is Regional Coding enhancement(RCE)?
A: It's a digital enhancement added to some Warner Bros and Columbia DVDs to stop region 1 (R1) DVDs from playing on Region-free DVD players.

Q: What's the difference between Region Coding and RCE?
A: Regional Coding enhancement(RCE) is an additional layer of protection which some studios have placed on select REGION 1 DVDs to prevent them from playing on region-free or multi-region players."
LGO says:

Procedure on converting the DV-980H

Conversion from Region 1 DVD Player to Region Free DVD Player

Press "Setup" on the remote control
Press "9210"
Press "0"
Press "Setup"

-------------------------------------------------------------------

To play back DVDs with RCE

Conversion from Region Free DVD Player to Region 1 DVD Player

Press "Setup" on the remote control
Press "9210"
Press "1"
Press "Setup"

Phil, just to let you know my proplem was solved by switching out to a new HDMI cable.  Hard to believe the fix was that simple.  Thanks for all the great advice. :thumb:
