Cartridge upgrade
« on: 20 Aug 2011, 05:42 pm »
I've had my new MH MMF5.1 SE running for a couple of weeks and it sounds great.  However, being the perpetual tinkerer that I am and always looking to make it a little better, I am already looking at different cartridges.  It came with a Ortofon Mojo which is a cartridge that is made just for MH by Ortofon.  I really don't want to add a step up transformer and I just want to run directly through my AVA phono stage, so I need either another MM cartridge or a high output MC.  With a budget of about $1000 in mind, I am looking at the Benz Glider-S or the Dynavector DV20x2, both high outputs, or at a MM Clearaudio Maestro wood cartridge.  Any experiences or comments about these 3 cartridges?  Thanks.

I can really only comment on one of those options.
I ran a DV 20XH for a while and although detailed and revealing I found it a little thin sounding into a std. MM stage.
I tinkered with it for a while and ended up dropping the resistive loading down to 1k - here everything fattened out nicely and the highs became even crisper and less dominant.
Loaded down it's a very nice cart. I've heard that the latest "2" spec. to be even nicer too  8)
If you're definately ruling out LOMC's then this is a great option.
Personally I'd be very torn between this and a Grado Reference Sonata 1, the latter giving you that fulsome Grado character.
At this budget, with LOMC off the table, these would be the two I'd be considering.
Good luck, with that budget you'll get something tasty  :thumb:

That's a nice budget and I'm sure you can get a great cart. I suggest you familiarize yourself with the sound of some of these to get a better idea of what suits you. Davey W has a web site with samples of diff carts. I don't have the link right now, I'm on another PC. But if you get an idea of the sound that's appealing, we can help sort it out.

The choices you posted are all highy regarded in the audio press, I believe.  The Maestro Wood is said to be on the lush and warm side which tweeks my fancy.  I have heard the Benz in a friend's system and was very impressed all around.  Probably somebody here at AC can comment on the Dynavector.  I'm gonna guess it's the quickest of the lot.  Based on that it might be the more exciting.  For my album collection which has some of everything I'd lean toward the first two but I'd really like to have an MC in reserve.  The ZU modified Denon 103 would be my first venture based on reviews I've read from persons I have confidence in like Art Dudley of Stereophile.  Plus it costs only around 400 bucks.

My Website is accessed from the Web (World) Icon under my Avatar.
I'm probably overly modest, don't like to be seen to be referring to my own site too often, thanks for highlighting Neo.
