tube amp with no sound
« on: 20 Aug 2011, 02:47 am »
My daughter had a sleepover last week and my onyx was left on for about thirty hours. I went to turn it on and noticed that it was on the girls had just turned down the volume. When i turn up the volume there is no sound until i power the amp down. Then i have sound for about five seconds until the tube discharge. I looked at the tubes they all appeared to be glowing. Any help would be appreciated.

I had something like that happen to me and it was a bad output tube. Replaced them and was back to playing music.

I had this happen to me when I first got my Manley tube amps. During shipment to me one of the tubes got molested by UPS and it blew. All of the tubes were glowing still, but there was no sound coming out of the amplifier.

The simplest solution is to try and change the tubes.

It gets hairy from there. If you change the tubes and there is no sound still, try replacing the fuses in the unit, if a tube went, a fuse could have also gone.

If you replace the tubes and the fuses and there is still no sound, you could have blown a cathode resistor.

This happened to me. One of the cathode resistors blew and it rendered the amplifier inoperable until I replaced it.

Manley sends out clip on resistors, so I could change it myself. However, if the unit needs to be soldered out of the resistor, and the new one soldered in, it gets confusing.

Good luck man!

Have you tried it again? Does the same thing happen when shutting the amp down?

Bad tube or bias circuit is acting up. When the amp is turned off, the bias voltage will decrease and allow the tubes to conduct for a short time before the filaments get too cool. Check the bias as well as the tubes.

If it is both channels are the same look at solutions that are common to both. Bias supply that Niteshade suggested is a good starting spot. Unlikely that both channels tubes went bad just being on at low volume overnight. If just one channel shows the problem Then check your tubes. What Onyx amp do you have?

Did you notice whether the amp was running cooler than usual?

I would like to thank you guys for your help. After reading Nightshades question  I decided to plug the amp back. In when sliding it back into it's spot I noticed on the right side of the amp that normally sits about one quarter inch from my center channel speaker the cd/ aux button which the girls switched off instead of the power switch on the opposite side of the amp. I never thought to check since it hadn't been switched in years. While being very happy I don't feel like the sharpest tool in the shed.

Great news! Don't feel bad we all have done stuff like that. Anyone that says it hasn't happened to them is probably lying. Glad you found the problem.
happy listening.
