WTB: AV123 X-series speakers
« on: 19 Aug 2011, 05:25 am »
Looking for a full 5.0 set of X-series (X-LS, X-CS, X-SLS, X-MTM).  If black finish, don't need the center (X-CS) as a buddy of mine has one I can buy locally..  but will consider any finish if you've got a full set you want to unload for a good price.  Prefer the original classic versions of the speakers, but would consider any.  Not interested in X-Statiks or X-Voce.  PM me what you've got.

I'm curious why you've crossed X-Statiks off your list.  IMHO are stunning for the price.

Well, there it is, and it's all that need be said.  One of the interesting things in this hobby is how we interact with the music and the stuff we buy to re-create it.  All that matters in the end is whether you like the sound.  I heard the X-Statik prototype in the designers living room.  To this day, I am not sure that I wouldn't have been happier with them than I am with my LS9s.

Thought the tweeters sounded slightly harsh/brittle..  not articulate.  Mids were okay, but a little recessed in their presentation..  and the bass was a bit 'flabby'.  That was in my more "picky" days of audio.  Now I'm looking for functional practicality.

That's odd. That was one of the best sounding dome tweeters that I have ever worked with and I have used just about everything available at one time or another. Held back a little by the stock crossover, sure, but a really good tweeter. Recessed mids, flabby bass? That's sounds pretty odd too. Sounds more like room related issues than characteristics of those speakers.

I showed a stock pair of those in my room at RMAF one year and one of the review magazines gave us a best sound at the show award.

I also have kits available for those models that you mentioned at really low prices right now.

Hey Danny..  I'm a fan of a lot of your stuff.  The X-Statik's just weren't my cup o' joe.  Not sure about the room, as I've had SOOO many speakers in here in the last few years.  Diff'rent strokes, I guess.  Was the tweeter the same used in the X Encore stuff?  Because I actually preferred the original X-series (classics) to the Encores.  But that's probably just me again.   :green:

Open baffle speakers just react differently in the room than a boxed speaker and must be a good three feet or more out into the room or problems occur.

The X-Statik used the same tweeter as the Encore models. And those were a much higher quality tweeter than the tweeter we used in the original Classic version. The Encore tweeter was a very high resolution tweeter. It might have revealed some things upstream that were not desired, while the tweeters used in the Classic version might have covered those things up a bit.

If you really like the Classic series then you might check with some of those guys in my circle that have been building cabinets for a lot of my customers. I bet jparkhur or Outofthewoods could build you some plan MDF boxes for not a lot of money. Then just shoot them Black with a bed spray liner or paint.

The kits for those models are dirt cheap right now and the crossover are pre-assembled. So cost is REALLY low and assembly is real easy.

The standard Classic version might not have been the top of that line, but those things did get great reviews and four or five industry awards. So they are still really good speakers.

Ah, well I definitely didn't (and couldn't) have the Statiks 3-feet into the room.  So that may have indeed been it.  Can one simply swap out a classic tweeter for an encore one without any other mods?  I'd look at those kits, but I just don't have the time, tools, patience, big enough 'swear jar', etc to assemble speakers right now.

Back them up to a wall and they'll really sound missed up. That is a given with any open baffle design.

No, the crossover has to change too.

It's easier than you think. Those are beginner level kits. But, if you want some of those same guys can fully assemble them for you.

I have a very pretty pair of the X-SLS in moho satin finish. They are the encore version. Let me know if you want to piece a set together...

Okay.  Now looking for any and all finishes (encore or classic) in the form of X-CS, X-LS, X-SLS, X-MTM..  maybe X-Omni for rears.  The more complete a set you have to offer, the better.
